Ya his cap hold will be like 16 or 18 mil so unless he’s willing to take a MASSIVE discount it would be beyond asinine to extend him this offseason
Exactly. Why would anyone expect extending Sengun or Ja Green this off-season? Unless the FO thinks that not extending will hamper the relationship permanently with one of the guys, it doesn’t make sense to extend. RFA is pretty safe. Also, observing both players for one more year is invaluable.
Green is actually a different situation because his cap hold is massive and he won't get a max, so extending him is reasonable. Extending sengun is not
If they extend him this offseason doesn't his rookie deal still count toward cap numbers for next year with the extension kicking in the following year? Is that a @BimaThug question?
His cap hold is 16.3 mil so he would count for 16.3 mil against the cap. If he gets extended this summer, his 2025 cap number would be in the 37-38 range i would guess, so rockets lose 20 mil in cap space for summer of 2025 and gain nothing. It's about 2025 cap space, it's like what philly is doing with Maxey. If they had maxed him last offseason they would have lost 20+ mil in cap space for this summer, instead they will max him out after they do their other moves this summer.
My understanding is if he is extended, the extension would be signed but he would still play the final year of his rookie contract with the extension kicking in the following year and thus the higher salary would fall in the 2025-2026 season. I fully admit I could be 100% wrong about that.
You’re correct, that’s just not what the issue is. If he signs his extension this offseason, he would count as like 38 mil for the summer of 2025. If he’s an FRA, his cap hold is 16.3 mil so rockets have an extra 21-22 mil in cap space for 2025. In either situation his salary is identical, just waiting a year allows the rockets an extra 21-22 mil in cap space next offseason
The Maxey situation is interesting. So, if he gets an offer sheet when free agency opens, you think he’ll decline it, wait for Morey to do all his other business with the faith that he’ll be taken care of at the end? If I’m Maxey’s agent I’d advise to sign the offer sheet and not trust Daryl Sleazebag Morey, but who knows what he’ll do…
Again, this is obvious. If he was a top 5 pick his cap hold would be much higher, thus the benefit of waiting a year would be much smaller. Don’t quote morons like this
Delicious Alperen doubter tears... Let's spin some more trades up, yeah? Spoiler Good lord. Imagine If he makes another massive jump in his shooting and physicality this off-season, as Udoka has asked. Uncharted territory...
Do also remember when Udoka signed, certain people were saying Sengun's days were numbered and Green would flourish? I sure do. This folks are clinging on the hope that Sengun will fail at some point.
Maxey is free to accept and should accept any max offer from another team, it doesn't matter. "Restricted free agent" means something lol.
