I've put a couple fear mongering quotes about immigrants below that are par for the course in Trump speeches at his MAGA rallies. If these millions and millions and millions and millions of immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country, and murdering our citizens, then why haven't murders per capital skyrocketed through the roof in the past 33 years? Murders Per Capita per 100,000 2023 5.51 1993 9.48 1992 9.31 1991 9.82 1990 9.45 Trump's racist fear mongering rally speeches “They let — I think the real number is 15, 16 million people into our country. When they do that, we got a lot of work to do. They’re poisoning the blood of our country,” Trump told the crowd at a rally in New Hampshire. “That’s what they’ve done. They poison mental institutions and prisons all over the world, not just in South America, not just to three or four countries that we think about, but all over the world. They’re coming into our country from Africa, from Asia, all over the world.” “They’re not human, they’re animals,” while keeping what “they” means vague. Trump insisted other countries are sending “prisoners, murders, drug dealers, mental patients, and terrorists” to our country, claimed migrants have “wrecked our country,” and blamed it all on “Biden’s border bloodbath.” https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/countries/USA/united-states/murder-homicide-rate https://www.deseret.com/2023/12/29/24018844/us-murder-rate-2023/#:~:text=According to the FBI Uniform,of 5.5 per 100,000 people.
I think there should be a penalty for lying and misinformation esp from public officials Rocket River
The issue at hand isn't the data... it's American's pursuit of fantasy. Just look at social media how much it is trending for people to post videos and fantasize about how during the eclipse the other day how there was "ANOTHER MOON" visible when "A MOON" covered the sun for those 4 minutes. Like people obviously should, and probably do understand that there is something called a "Lens Flare" on cameras and is even reflected naturally to the naked eye. However PEOPLE CHOSE to believe a fantasy about there being a secret planet out there, or some alien object because it made them FEEL something they wanted to feel. ..... Back to immigration/feels based fear, it's the same where people are allowing themselves a fantasy that is self serving their desire for either something to blame in their lives, or some otherworldly threat to excite them in an otherwise mundane everyday life. Trump is an entertainer at heart who just naturally slides right in to act as the moment's Alex Jones type exciter of conspiracy, and fantasy. There will always be a Trump or Alex Jones. The problem really is our societal mental collapse. In 2024, more and more people for whatever reason are CHOOSING to believe a lie, and live in a fantasy.
I think it is very wrong for a US President or presidential candidate to dehumanize an entire group of people by calling them "animals". That said, are there any stats on what percentage of murders are committed by illegal immigrants vs. their percentage of the overall population? That would be a more insightful statistic than pointing to an overall reduced murder rate (which is great). Maybe without illegal immigration, the murder rate would be even much lower? (I haven't looked it up.)
OK found some articles... https://www.newsweek.com/migrants-arrested-murder-biden-admininistration-1880343 Probably needs a deeper look at the statistics, we all know how all sides of an argument use statistics to bolster their argument.
This issue address the lie that there is a huge crime spike due to immigrants. There isn't a huge crime spike at all. And immigrants commit fewer crimes than U.S. born citizens. The issue of the crime rates have been discussed on these boards before a few different times. Illegal immigrants have a lower rate than US born residents. Legal immigrants have the lowest rate of all. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...-immigrant-crime-rate-not-higher/72788637007/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/...sted-for-violent-crimes-as-u-s-born-citizens/ https://news.wisc.edu/undocumented-immigrants-far-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-in-u-s-than-citizens/
Occam's razor. The last thing an asylum seeker wants to do is commit a crime and become ineligible for asylum. The last thing an "illegal alien" wants to do is commit a crime and be deported.
..or get caught illegally voting and get deported. That's the most laughable lie that I hear. BTW, border encounters are currently down 48% since December.
Believe me, there were far less immigrants 33 years ago. That's my point. Everywhere I go now people are speaking foreign languages. It wasn't like that 3 decades ago. So, the rate of immigrants is much higher, yet the murder rate went down. Trump is spreading such racist BS that is simply meant to incite fear about immigrants. He acts like they are killing people far more than others. That simply can't be true.
I still think the homeless and mentally ill are the bigger issues but the conservatives always like to fear monger about the aliens invading.
Conservatives don't care about people in need. They don't care about affordable healthcare, affordable care facilities for elderly and disabled people, the horrible abuse and negligence in those facilities, prenatal care, social services being undermanned, helping people with disabilities, or lack of enough mental health care availability. They call that Communism. They only care about businesses, the oil barons and billionaires, and in the gun dealers and NRA.
Word on The Street is that Dementia Don built a wall all long the entire southern border and Mexico paid for it. Of course, that is not true, but we are now in a truth free political era. Knowing the above, SCW snowflakes can rest a little easier at night and isn't that what is truly important? Also knowing the above cause liberals to cry, SCW snowflakes might even have a sound sleep for once. Again, we must understand our priorities, people.
If my time as a federal prosecutor is any indication - it is systemic poverty that causes violent crime rates to be high. Typically family units break down, with the parents either working a lot and you have broken family units without a father in the picture. You then have a community surrounding these people with the exact same situation. As a result these children starting at an early age are raised and/or depend on older kids in the neighborhoods and their peer group..... which is a breeding ground for violence and gangs. It then becomes self perpetuating. I won't say that I had NO immigrants that committed crime. We did have street gang leaders for example that were from Venezuela, Mexico or China or Vietnam. These people typically came from outside the USA and moved into the USA and lead and recruited people that were first or second generation Americans to do organized crime. For example - the high levels of female slavery in Texas is a result of Mexicans and Koreans moving into the USA, and establishing organized crime syndicates that smuggle in women to work in cantinas, Asian spas and brothels. Still - it is hard to pin that on most Mexicans or Koreans that move into the USA legally of illegally and it is a relatively small number of immigrants involved in this. If anything - I find that second or third generation immigrants that are raised in high crime rates are the ones that commit crime more so than their parents, but even that is somewhat uncommon. I will say the research shows that immigrants do not commit as much violent crime. There are exceptions, but really if the USA wants to tackle the violent crime rate in places like Houston - they need to do a better job of preventing systemic poverty, have more proactive mental health care available to children in school and working on changing the culture and establishing a real sense of community. Also - what isn't discussed is that almost all of this violent crime is committed by young men - which means as a society we are not raising, teaching or holding our young men accountable. Even being emersed in the culture - there are certain "trauma" situations or individuals I would avoid. Vietnamese that came to America in the 70's for example were in certain cases victims or extreme PTSD. Same with Venezuelans now. The people coming to the USA from Venezuela in some cases have lived essentially in a war zone with no hope and seen extreme violence.
Exactly! This is what will help most. That being said, trickle down economics is not the answer. You can't make things better if you widen the gap between rich and poor, and send more people into poverty, where their only options are to live and raise children in seedy, more dangerous neighborhoods, or into homelessness, and on the streets struggling to survive.
The issue isn't that there are rich people - in fact I would argue that we do not have enough rich people. The problem is the SUPER rich, who have entirely too high a wealth concentration and control of assets. A lot of that wealth should re-directed into social programs, aid and school and community outreach situations.
Thank you, QFT. I wouldn't say we have to give up with data, but we have to realize that just giving people the correct and validated data will sadly not solve our problems, at all. A group of people have followed a handful of shysters into a seductive, self-reinforcing, orange-hued land of mythology.
Every demo a politician panders to is a shareholder, and those pension, index, retirement fund managers are only looking to extract the most value for themselves to extract the percentage operation fee that makes the future retiree less wealthy despite decades of compound interest. These whales dictate how the market goes and deftly navigating how the market goes justifies multimillion dollar packages to CEOs. As long as we live in a society where shareholder value overrides customer or societal value, the get-mines first mentality will exacerbate wealth inequality and top down white collar corruption
