Ehh - if they really knew he was cooked, he wouldn’t be playing. They have played him a lot so far. Pinch hitting for him when he is struggling doesn’t mean they think he is toast to me - but that he is struggling. I do think the reason is important. If it is an injury or mental - they can possibly work with that. If it’s a skill erosion, then there is no hope. I personally wouldn’t release him. I would give him a week off though and I would scout Loperfido a lot, talk to Belt and see what sort of prospect Cooper would cost. It shouldn’t be much. Astros really should be able to cobble together an .800 OPS there.
Nov 22, 2022 Astros sign Abreu to 3 yr 58.5 million Jan 23, 2023 Rays sign Yandy Diaz to 3 yr $24 million (Plus a team option for a 4th year) Did we screw the pooch?
Yeah, this team is starting to look similar to the Mets last year. We won’t be that bad because the starting pitching is better (assuming Framber isn’t done and JV is himself when he returns) but the depth is just awful. Just look at the Rangers…Jung and Lowe are out and their bench guys (Walsh and Josh Smith) played well against us. Meanwhile, we are actually giving Jon Singleton ABs while starting Meyers, who should be a 4th OFer.
If he cant catch up to fastballs, he’s done. He’s not barreling anything up. There is no bad luck or balls hit hard. No warning track shots or HR’s robbed by the ballpark. There is just either misses or weak/late contact. They should be able to figure out his bat speed with some sort of analytical tool… much like they calculate spin rate. My guess is they’ve already done that. The slightest delay in brain processing to hand/eye coordination to muscle aging (all age related issues) can lead to this. He can try selling out for it.. as biggio was doing towards the end of his career (while he was basically chasing milestones).
Yeah man I feel bad for him and really want him to succeed. I’ve never seen a player fall off the cliff so quickly.
Diaz was not a free agent. He signed an extension that covered 2 years of arbitration. Not really a comparable situation.
Pretty sure everyone wanted Abreu and the decision was made while click was bm to go hard after him. I know I was stoked when we signed him.
