Looking to cut salary to make a Snell deal? Not saying it's what I want, but if you dump someone like Ryan Pressly, you can give Snell his 30
Trimming the fat, stocking the farm, creating a little more budget flexibility to sign Snell. But the question is how much talent will be sacrificed to create how much budget flexibility?
$20M? maybe a player option gets it down to a point both are happy? I can't really see it working over 3 yrs but maybe 4? 3 yr deal $65M structured $33M, $20M, $12M and a players option for $11M/$5M buyout and an opt out after each year. $19M AAV Snell gets his $33M for 2024 and can opt out. Astros can save the worst of the CBT penalties and are likely not on the hook for 4 years but if they are its at a manageable AAV and reduced real money salary each year. Snell gets a $70M guarantee in case of career threatening injury or severe underperformance.
Trade Abreu and Montero in salary dumps? Install Loperfido at 1B and sign Snell? $66M with an opt out is a lot of downside. If Snell sucks then you pay all that for nothing. Absolute best case scenario is you get maybe $50M of value out of him this season and he opts out. So best case is $17M of surplus value, worst case is $66M in negative value. Not sure I’d do that.
