They don’t. They just want an issue to hammer the other side with. Without having to come up with workable or realistic solutions.

Rolls eyes It has always been this way. I remember in the 1980's and 1990's the US government not knowing who most of the illegal aliens in Texas actually were and their past outside of the USA. Police departments only knew who they said they were when they would go and get a license for example - but there was no way to check. I hear discussion of Chinese nationals coming into the USA at the border - with the assumption being that they will spy on the USA. This is silly. Why? Because they can spy without doing that. The USA has always been very open, there are already numerous Chinese and Russia and Israeli and French spies in positions of power and influence in the USA. We benefit from being very open, but that is one of the negative consequences. The United States needs immigration reform - circumstances and times change and the laws and protocols needs to be updated....... but a lot of the scare tactics being used are silly.
Nope - the "rugged individualism" that we have so often heard of has morphed into incredible entitlement and selfishness in Washington. The real attitude is "I'll get mine". These people are not working in the best interest of the American people.
Dams are bursting because the US government has been more concerned about tax breaks for the ultra rich and fighting 20 year wars across the world - than they have about rebuilding the infrastructure. Besides - Musk has threatened to move to China where he has no regulation of his workers... if this man is so inclined, then why should anyone that cares about the USA take anything he says seriously?
"Migrant encounters" (poor indicator, but the right loving using it) hit record high in 2023. And 2023 has seen a historic decline in violent crimes.
