this thread got me wanting to listen to U2. i still listen to war all the time as well as unforgettable fire and joshua tree, but i probably havent listened to actung baby since the 90's. its so freaking good! edge is at the top of his game here. great guitar playing all over this record. really the whole band is individually and collectively at their peak. and half the tunes on this album were radio hits.

its crazy to think that joshua tree was as huge as it was with as many hits and then they followed it up with this. totally different sound but just as big and hit-filled.

war is still my favorite though.

I can't think of a band that went from "I love you" to "wtf is this" as fast as U2. And Metallica.

    REM eased into it.

Not really other than it was like U2 (mainly Bono, I would suspect) decided to do the "genre hopping" exercise similar to what Neil Young did in the '80s. Artists can afford to do this when record sales no longer matter and they know that their label won't drop them. I can appreciate the fact that the band didn't want to put out the same record every time, but some of the genre changes were pretty jarring to say the least.

Good answer, good answer. I'll be watching you.

This thread has a distinct lack of music videos.

There's also a distinct lack of funk and hi-hop, btw.

I was thinking the same thing, along with soul. Many of the great funk acts have a slew of people, including a horn section, so how do you grade them on the all-star metric? For instance, The Brothers Johnson are definitely all-star talent, especially Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson on bass, but the brothers also carried a horn section and several additional additional musicians. I guess you could say Sam and Dave are all-stars, but do duos with session musicians count?

Speaking of session musicians, maybe the best argument is for Booker T and the MGs (Donald "Duck" Dunn, Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, and Al Jackson, Jr.), who were the house band for Stax records and had a few hits.

Jackson was the drummer and co-wrote a number of hits, including Let's Stay Together with Al Green.

Cropper played guitar and co-wrote numerous songs, including (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay with Otis Redding and Sam and Dave's Soul Man.

Dunn played bass on a huge number of hit songs, including ones by Sam and Dave, Elvis, Muddy Waters, Clapton, Nicks, Petty, and others.

Jones was a musical prodigy and started out playing sax before moving to keys. He also co-wrote a number of songs, including Born Under a Bad Sign.

Dunn and Cropper were also part of The Blues Brothers band.

If we start talking Jazz, we've got more than a few groups to mention, including this one:

to be fair to U2, they have always been a band that doesnt stay in one place for too long. the difference between war and the follow-up, unforgettable fire is pretty huge. its the same dudes, but a totally different band. then from joshua tree to actung baby then whatever silly stuff they did for the rest of the 90's. each album is different than the last, which i can appreciate.
