Good point although Billy Corgan’s ego is too big to share the stage (their drummer Chamberlain is or was pretty good). The Cult were always Ian Astbury, Billy Duffy, and whoever they felt should be the bass player and the drummer. As for The Smiths, Joyce and Rourke were competent players but they never had the charisma and star power of Morrissey and Marr. Fun fact - Duffy and Morrissey used to be in a band together called The Nosebleeds.

Corgan and Chamberlain were the SP (BC played all the other bass and guitar parts in recording) -- when JC was out with his drug issues the group lost its distinctive sound. I heard about Duffy and Morrissey's band back in the day -- it seems like there is a humourous story about Duffy leaving but I can't recall. Probably something to do with Morrissey being a raging DB.

Avery and Perkins were cream of the crop. Dave N get a lot of the spotlight but that rhythm section was fantastic.

Andy Rourke was a good bass player but Morrissey himself wanted Simon Wolstencroft to play drums but they had to get Mike Joyce. Another fun fact, Wolstencroft spent some time with both The Fall and an early version of The Stone Roses.

And that reminds me - The Stone Roses - unbelievable guitarist in John Squire (highly influenced by Johnny Marr), outstanding bassist in Mani and a hugely underrated drummer in Reni. Ian Brown? I guess he was a great frontman but he was clearly the weakest link in that group.

in many cases those background session players were better than the names! and the top tier session players make great money, dont have to tour 6-9 months a year and and also get to keep their anonymity. maybe they are the real all-stars!

George Harrison is definitely an "all star" talent, he is arguably the second most talented Beatle.

    Allman Brothers Band: Allman/Allman/Betts/Oakley/Trucks/Johanson

Then later they replaced Duane and Oakley with Warren Haynes and Oteil Burbridge
