The Angels will be devastated financially. The Rangers are going to lose guys due to their tv deal. We might be back up.

$70M/year is a lot given they already know he'll miss pitching one season at a minimum.

That’s insane. Like, it’s hard to believe that a pro athlete being paid that much money won’t cause riots and ****. Wow.

Better hope Ohtani can pitch or that contract is going to be an albatross.

He would have to be a 9 war player for the entirety of the contract to make it make sense from a pure baseball standpoint. I assume they will sell a lot of jerseys though. Do they have their own TV channel?

This is the undeniable advantage that the Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets have. This kind of contract could potentially destroy most other franchises if it went sour, but those three have enough money to tolerate the insane risk.

That’s very interesting. I didn’t know deferrals impacted the luxury tax calculations. Something to keep in mind as we look forward to a likely Altuve extension.

And I thought $500 million was crazy but then Dodgers said here's another $200 million lol. I wonder what the Jays offer was and I wonder if Dodgers panicked and upped their offer to 700.
Also imagine being his agent. What's his cut? More than some other baseball players lol

No opt out? I mean 70 mill a year in 10 years will be scrub money for star athletes.

Every year the Dodgers and Yankees open up the checkbook and add the biggest name players. At some point it won't be sustainable for MLB.

If it's deferred enough, then the time value of money could make this contract way less - really depends on how much is deferred to know just how crazy the contract is.

I have no idea whatsoever what kind of financial finaglings wrt structure, instruments, interest, etc... are allowed, or if there's even any restrictions at all.

Finally, now that the distraction is done and he's gone to a team that'll still lose to the Brewers next year. Other teams can start signing. Who's going to get overpaid by 20mil per next?

Did Ohtani just *double* the largest contract in sports history?

Whatever it is, this won't end well for the Dodgers. Ohtani has likely already experienced the healthiest portion of his career.

Complete desperation by the Dodgers and I'm okay with it.
