Stay tuned… Wow… seems like an extreme overpay by Seattle. Kelenic at times seemed really close to breaking out and living up to the hype. I also believe Evan White was one of their top prospects at one time. I bet Kareners fans aren’t happy.

There was a little more to that than getting paid. Yes money was important but springer wanted out of Houston as soon as he could. He felt disrespected with how he was handled when he was called up. There were a couple of other things going on.
Yes but the Jays valuation is too high right now. They like the infielder Lowe. If the Blue Jays are to be believed, Meyers isn’t enough.
The Mariners are so cheap…I ALMOST feel bad for all their fans who are so loyal to such a trash franchise that’s main goal is milking every dollar of profit they can out of the team. I believe they are the most profitable team in the MLB yet they are actively making multiple salary dump deals (Suarez and now Kelenic) after missing the playoffs by a game because they were too cheap to fill their massive holes on offense the offseason before.
Bregman should get what he can get (as should all players). The $100M he’s already guaranteed meets my definition of generational wealth though.
When they signed Julio Rodriguez, there was going to be collateral damage. Kelenic and Suarez may not ever take that next leap to star level and are getting paid more and more the longer they stay in the league. But yes, its somewhat of a salary dump that they're getting some value in return. The Mariners core is much like Oakland's core was before covid. Lots of great pieces but not much to show for it thus far, and their core is about to get very expensive.
Signing Julio Rodriguez is not the problem. It isn't close to the problem. Their problem, if any, is mostly the Astros, trying to compete with the Astros too long, rebuilding quickly without building enough depth, and then going for it without enough depth with teams not as good as the Astros (signing Robbie Ray, trading for Castillo) possibly shortening their window of being good. Sometimes going for it works. Most of the time, it just takes away chances to win in the future.
It's probably closer to $55-60M after taxes and agent/management fees, and a horse racing operation cannot survive on salsa money, alone.
The Astros tried to keep him in the minors longer than he needed so they could retain him on a lower salary longer. I would be pissed too. If someone held back your promotion for a few months so you don't bonus would you not be angry or would you be like "it's all good I'm a company guy"
The GM who orchestrated that is no longer with the Astros, or in baseball at all for that matter In any case, loved him when he was here, but an overpaid George isn't what the Astros need anyway. Best of luck George
It was in response to them being “cheap”. I pretty much echoed the sentiment that they’ve got a core thats getting more expensive and they don’t have much to show for it. Much like how the Blue Jays are in the same position. Whether payrolls are getting expensive based on “going for it” or just your homegrown players reaching arbitration/near FA all at the same time, teams that don’t have unlimited payrolls have to make considerable choices on how to stay relevant… and yes, the Astros have nearly everything to do with them having “nothing to show for it”, much like they did with Oakland’s core. The Rodriguez comment is more in line that they’re somewhat obligated to try and compete with him on the roster for the next 10-12 years vs simply just do a total rebuild/teardown.
