What do you mean? Only the remaining salary is being paid... which 3 or so more pay periods...

Giolito would be a nice pick up to rest Javier. I tend to think he would be better in Houston than he was with the dumpster fire Angels.

Matt Moore would be a great lefty to grab too.

The Astros do not expect there to be any players they will want by the time the waiver players reach them on the wire.

There are a number of teams ahead of the Astros in the playoff search.

Do no trade clauses have any impact on eligibility of teams in claiming a player?

It also could have implications for taxes and draft compensation if they lose Ohtani.

I think it is smart - if you are out of the race, it helps your draft position, you can get some guys in AAA time to see how they look in the big leagues and it makes agents and players happy.

    Why is the bullpen gassed?

Part of it is that the Astros have been down a number of starters out due to injury, that the starters are gassed from a long post season last year and in some cases the WBC - that a couple of the Astros starters have never pitched a lot of innings, but are pitching even less now... that Montero was unbelievably bad for a few months and the offense was mediocre for the first half of the season so the Astros had to keep using the same 3-4 relievers in close games.

Graveman has made a big difference, but we have also played a lot of games without a lot of days off.

I am sure the Astros would jump all over Moore.

Yes, I think ESPN Astros crew mentioned Dusty doesn't trust the bull pen and uses the same 4 players.

Nah. Fans are simply wasting waaaaaaaaaaay too much energy on marginal improvements, and being disingenuous with how things were playing out in real time. I've detailed that, and everyone ignores it and screams about how a team that's averaging 100 wins a year and goes to the World Series, like, all the time, would actually, somehow, win * even more* if they just listened to their smart fans who know everything.

Finding and exploiting marginal improvements is a large part of what separates good orgs from bad ones.

Not having a better .002 win percentage is helping us tons right now with waiver wire rules. There's butterfly issues, but baseball is a game of millimeters and the margins matter. But not complaining if that .002 saves us tomorrow.

I think the claiming team is responsible for what ever additional years the players contract includes. of course they keep the player for those years too.

    This is accurate.

But if a guy is unclaimed and then granted FA, he can sign anywhere for the prorated min MKB salary and his prior team is on the hook for the rest of his salary.

Matt Moore always looks nasty af against us... He would be a nice addition, but doubt we'll have a shot.

I don't ever remember so many starter level players being (irrevocably) waived the end of August before

And aren't the vast majority of the players currently on waivers on 'expiring deals'? Not sure about Donaldson though...

Also, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict they won’t win 100 this year. Other years the margins didn’t matter during the regular season. This year they really, really do.
