Most likely not and I wouldn't judge him for that. I think he would probably go a different route for a starter.
Damn. We need JV and have a win now window but **** we gave up a lot especially compared to the Rangers trade.
We bid against ourselves and overpaid. Think about it: JV had a VERY SHORT list - confirmed Full no trade clause - JV gets to pick Family lived in Houston. He's at the end of his career and probably doesn't want to move his family to an unknown city again. Good relationship with owner - check Good relationship with Astros players Wants to contend for titles Most realistic competitor teams publicly dropped out Mets did the deal with time on the clock - meaning they got what they wanted back He wanted to be here - confirmed Jon Heyman is a die hard Yankees fan and wanted to drive up the price for Houston... his posts about the Dodgers and the "mystery team" were likely garbage.
Well you were responding to speculation in the post I responded to. Regardless, you’re drawing a conclusion based on speculation, whether it’s your own or another’s.
He has only pitched 94 innings this season - he pitched 175 innings last year. So he isn't likely to be gassed like he was last year. He isn't as dominant as last year so far - but after a slow month, he has had an era of like 2.10 the last two months.
I’d only argue that the overpay isn’t as bad as you think since we get V for basically 10MM per year for the next 2.5 years. If that helps net us a Tucker extension, Gilbert and Clifford don’t matter as much. caveat being that Tucker extension though…
I simply can’t believe that. JV isn’t in the business of screwing over the dudes that pay him ungodly amounts of money. Odds are he would’ve been happy to stay a Met through at least the end of the season at least and Cohen would’ve gladly kept him if he didn’t get a decent return. We weren’t just bidding against ourselves, we were bidding against an owner who doesn’t care about holding on to sunk costs unless it nets him a decent return. Low balling the Mets would’ve netted us nothing.
Not speculation, observation. The moves and the way its come down look like Crane's hand in things to me.
Just a few thoughts on the deal. RE the Mets - this is very interesting. They go out and spend the world this year, only to sell and replenish their minor league talent. Interesting approach for sure, but crazy to think this team was title contending early on. Giving up Gilbert sucks, but for the Astros... this is very much a mirror of 2017. Ready to reign looking real promising...
I think Verlander didn't want to test the Mets resolve on ultimately keeping him out of spite. I can imagine a scenario where the Mets don't allow him to get to 140 innings next year and he's out $35 mil. I'm sure the Mets would have traded him regardless but that's a big gamble for Verlander to take. The Astros were worries Verlander would be presented with an offer of LA last minute saying "take it or leave it" and Verlander takes it. Houston can hold out as much as they want but this is JVs entire life (one where he may not have been willing to f with)
