Can you please elaborate on when "his time" was? He's the reigning AL CY winner, threw a gem against the NYY in the ALCS last yr and only gave up one run in 5 IP against PHI last yr in the WS. On top of that he's been on fire over the past two months with the NYM. So again please enlighten us with how he's "past his time" and instead of spewing whatever thought swirls around your head and how you feel please back it up with facts. We'll wait....
Teams are crazy to make these types of deals with the Rays.......... two of the top 30 prospects in baseball are players that the Rays traded for as teenagers from the Indians and Phillies.......
He wouldn't do that publicly. He may tell that to the Mets in private - and his agent may call Crane on another player he represents and tell Crane JV will only waive his NTC for the Astros - but going public would only cause issues. There are already some teams like the White Sox that think it smells of collusion, and gossip in baseball always gets around, so the Astros and Verlander are going to be very cautious. Crane wants no more issues with the MLB front office.
Going backwards? We undid Maldonado leaving in less than 8 months in 2019 -- and despite how much I complain about Maldy today, it worked. We gave up Ausmus only to realize Meluskey wasn't it. We acquired Caminiti a 2nd time, which was not a mistake. Beltran though... okay fine.
yeah I don’t get Crane . Could’ve signed him last year for cash only ; would’ve been worth it with all the playoff success we’ve had. And now we have to give away prized prospects, which come at a premium for the Stros, to get back what we already could’ve had . Idk - sometimes he’s too “clever” for his own good and we end up doing all these gymnastics to bring back a player and maybe costing us a longer window of competitiveness in the future by giving up prospects .
Royals fans have no expectations of success. There's the midwestern ethic of doing your best to succeed, while understanding that there's going to be someone from a coast with more resources that is likely better than you. It makes their world series much sweeter, though. This move is an improvement. They traded Nicky Lopez for Taylor Hearn like 2 weeks after he went from the Rangers to the Braves via DFA. This time they only gave up cash.
Not sure where I read it, but the philosophy of the Rays (at least about 5-6 years ago) with trading was that they had to think they were absolutely robbing the other team to make a trade. If they got offered a fair trade, they wouldn't do it even if they thought it would help them. Basically, if they were wrong on a trade, odds are good they don't lose that trade by a lot and might even still win it.
I don't think I understand what you are saying. If you are claiming bringing back a player will bite you in the ass - every circumstance is different. Verlander's injury history and wearing out in the playoffs and age are all known quantities - so is his 5 year run with the Astros where he had an era of 2.20 with two Cy Youngs, a 2nd place finish in the Cy Young and two Championships. It all comes down to whether or not the Astros believe Verlander is still good, and is likely to be good next year as well. Verlander started slow this season and is on a tear right now... As for Hunter Brown, he is the most valuable of the Astros young pitchers and so far the Astros have not included him in discussions. Also, while 5 years of Hunter is really nice - lets not forget the Astros would get 2.5 years of Verlander at likely half price. The Astros are trying to get Verlander AND keep Brown. There will always be risks when you trade for a player.
Yeah - that is the Kevin Goldstein philosophy that he brought to the Astros. That is what he did on the Francis Martes deal and the Alvarez deal.... and it is the philosophy that Click used in the Straw trade. I think it is a smart philosophy. The Rays scout the lowest leagues more than any other organization in baseball. The Dodgers and Astros and Marlins do often too, but not as often as the Rays.
Insurance just I case Bichette is done???? Or I wonder if they already know and he's out. Huge blow to them.
