I dont know if it was posted already but Bill Simmons and Russilo threw this scenario out: Boston gets Dame, Rockets get Jaylen Brown, Portland gets picks and two of Green, Smith Jr, Eason, Whitmore Thoughts? I don't think I'd do it.
I said this in another thread, but I'm OK if they don't add any more players at this point beyond a random veteran or two to fill out the roster. If Grant Williams is there and they can make a move to get him, do it. I'm 1,000% with you on that. But I also don't want to see them eat cap room just to eat it. You've already got a full roster with guys who need minutes, and you want to keep that financial flexibility going into the next two summers to be able to add a star if one becomes available.
oh I definitely don’t want them to spend more money, unless it’s on someone like Grant Williams. But I’m confused why we opened the extra space if we weren’t gonna use it.
My initial thought was I'd pass, but I think it depends on the picks and prospects going out. My concern is that they'd have to turn around and extend him with a long-term max, which kills any financial flexibility moving forward. But if it were something reasonable like Green + Whitmore and 2 firsts, I'd at least have to consider that. My guess is they'd want something more like Green, Smith, 3 firsts and swaps. And I have zero interest in a deal like that.
If what has been said in the last 48 hours in the media is true, it sounds like they did it to up their offer to Lopez, who balked and left them with cap room and no way to spend it. It's hard to know right now. I'd love to think they have some great Plan B in the works to add a borderline star or a major impact player. But as the dust is slowly settling, I think Landale and Green might have been their Plan B.
I think they said it's a choice of Green/Jabari and a choice of Eason/Whitmore. So we wouldn't lose both Green and Jabari. They both thought Jabari was better than Green and Tari was better than Whitmore.
Of what’s left, I do like Grant Williams as a fit a lot — especially if you can swap Tate in the move to open up minutes. The other interesting names with various degrees of shooting upside — Terence Davis (didn’t realize he had domestic abuse allegation. Charges dropped, but still) Terrence Ross (another vet - more size and 3 and D upside) Svi Mykhailuk (cheap shooter to fill out roster) Austin Rivers (reunion tour!) Will Barton (washed?) Mo Bamba as a 3rd center would be interesting to me — I wouldn’t rely on him as even a primary backup, but he’s got upside to play alongside Sengun if he plays well. He’ll probably have better offers out there, though.
Looking at the team, and the reports that we're keeping Tate, we could use a 3rd string combo guard and center to finish the roster (Like those Washington and Garuba fellows) Guards George Hill Matthew Dellavedova Raul Neto Aaron Holiday Goran Dragic DJ Augustin Centers Robin Lopez Taj Gibson Udoka Azubuike Frank Kaminsky Boban Marjanovic Meyers Leonard Mfiondu Kabengele Moussa Diabate It's a sad list but they'd be signing up to be bench warmers on a non playoff team. Perhaps we could find some on the trade market (like that Patty Mills fellow we just dumped for 2nds)
Random trade idea. Minnesota needs to clear up their C situation. Cavs need more scoring. Rockets need a rim protector. Cavs receive: KAT Minnesota receives: KPJ Whitmore Landale BKN 2024 FRP from Rockets 2024 FRP from Cavs Houston receives: Jarrett Allen Caris Lavert I could see all 3 teams saying No. But hey, the salaries work.
Naturally Bill Simmons wants to offload their star player who's (a) wanting a big pay raise and (b) exposed in the playoffs as utterly unable to dribble with his left hand. If Imael Stone-doka want to dip into the Boston well, Grant Williams would be a more reasonable catch.
