We will make the playoffs. And then we will shock everyone.

correct. this is what a lot of people are forgetting.

people: why are they spending so much money?
rockets: we have to in order to hit the spending floor.
people: then why so much on 1 good player instead of smaller friendlier deals on lesser players?
rockets: we don't own our own picks for 3 years and might as well try to be good. 1 good player wins more than 3 vet bench players on friendly contracts.
people: but the third year makes it a terrible contract vs 2 years.
rockets: we forecast this contract as affordable into year 3 since we have so many low cost/rookie deals that balance our cap sheet.

truth is they had to spend. harden is better but not the style of play udoka thinks is best to win and best to develop others to make decisions with the ball. Kyrie is better but not the "adult in the room" udoka wants in order to reset the culture that the rockets are now infamous for.

FVV on court might be worth $30M AAV which is what Toronto was offering. we have to pay say $5M more ($35M AAV) just to get him to leave his current team. then we have to add another $5M ($40M AAV) to get him to sign with the team with the worst record over the past 3 seasons. why is it worth overpaying? we need to, we can afford it, he will help win when there's no more incentive to lose, and he's exactly the type of vet (championship experience, A+ locker room guy) that this team needs.

so the notion of "now we paid max for a guy so we should be a playoff team or this is a bad deal" is silly because almost every team has a max contract guy. welcome to attempting to be competitive again. we had to return some day.

that being said we will be better than people think. we won 22 games, just adding real nba coaching will raise that to near 30. add internal improvements and I would bet on 30 easily. now add fvv and I could easily see approaching mid 30's. we can still add a vet starter with the remainder of our cap space and hopefully that's enough to get us approaching 40 wins. jalen and KPJ also missed substantial time last year. just being more healthy (or having games worth playing for) could easily set us up for a winning record this year!

This thread is pre-mature. We could easily be a play-off contender depending on who we sign. I’m very confident that Jabari, Green, and Sengun will all improve with a real coach. We’ve added a safe PG that takes away 3 TO’s a game. It strengthens our bench if KPJ acts professionally. If we can land a Grant Williams or OG or Bridges and a backup center like Capella. We are playoff contenders. None of those proposed guys have to be just temporary. They are serious rotation guys on a championship calibre team. If we end up with Dillon Brooks as our only other signing we will struggle to make the play-in.

FVV wasn't brought into be a franchise player.

This isn't the "final form" of the Rockets but the beginning of the next phase.

I agree but our coach at the time had a near "no consequences" attitude though when you miss an assignment, out of position etc. This is something you can dramatically improve and it's not like our team isn't athletic enough to close out and just play basketball 101.

Thing is - You can't teach height or good instincts though so - rim protector and it's difficult to force PG skills into an SG/SF like we have been attempting so a natural PG with some other skills mixed in.

I would add that FVV On/Off +/- is great almost his entire career. When he is out there he is a positive. We will literally be moving from a guy who was -8.8ppg oncourt to FVV who was +2.6 (and +5.5 career). FVV is also super low turnover percentage. He should really directly address some serious deficiencies.

My only concern with him is he shot a career low from 3 last season. Hopefully he works on that with the coaches to get it back up to at or above his career avg. If he can his contribution would be epic.

FVV also shoots 90% from the free throw line which will add a couple additional points per game on average as our go-to for that.

    If it's James Harden, yes.

    FVV? No.

All we need is JH teaching his teammates to fly to vegas in the middle playoff series etc. You really think a team full of 18-21 year olds needs that lesson?

I'm guessing they aren't done tinkering. Probably one more piece in the cards.

OP, to ask a question like that, you need a poll with it.

Making these free agent moves does not make them a playoff team. They need more help, with FVV they moved from a AAU team to a professional basketball team. Getting Amen and Brooks help our perimeter defense but not our interior defense. We was one of the worst non caring defense team in the league. It’s going to take time to change our culture. I believe we are a 35-37 winning team but we need a interior defender like Brook Lopez, Myles Turner or Capela to be a definitive playoff contender

To make the playoffs, we would have to be better than 5 western conference teams.
Which 5 do you think we will be better than?

    Spurs?
    Jazz?
    Portland?
    Pelicans?
    OKC?

Better than all 5 of these teams?

No, this will likely not be a playoff team, unless the West is really really bad next year.
