Holy Christ. I just looked at a monthly plan for one of my rentals that was vacated that I need to do a little work on. .25/kwh…..fuuuuuuu
Locked in at 9.3 cents with Discount Power for 2 more years. Used 2100kwh this month...whew. "Although there are more than 90 retail electric providers operating in Texas, The Houston Chronicle has reported that NRG and Vistra could end up controlling about 75 percent of the market — a calculation the newspaper based on the companies’ securities filings and other presentations." NRG owns Discount Power, Direct Energy, Green Mountain... Vistra acquired Dynegy in 2018. In 2019, Ambit Energy was acquired, resulting in a 32% residential market share in ERCOT, with NRG Energy as its largest competitor. It also acquired Crius Energy in 2019
Not sure how you pulled that off but I'm jealous. What is the rate for over 1,000? I just got my electric bill for July and I used about 2,083 kwh. And, it's cost me almost $300. This...after I tried a few things to lessen my power consumption. I had my thermostat mostly set to 81 degrees. At night, turned off central air and used a window a/c unit. I'm guessing using the window unit didn't save me as much money as I hoped it would as I was running it on full blower mode at 65 degrees. lol. I cut back usage on my pool pump (albeit not until halfway through the month). Going over 2,000...my rate was 13.6 cents per kwh(compared to 13.7 over 1,000). I think I probably need more attic insulation and may consider radiant barrier. That radiant heat does tend to hit me at night after the sun goes down. I couldn't imagine what my bill would be if I ran at 78 degrees. It would probably be $500. Last year for July I paid $175 but I believe it was a lot cooler last year compared to this year. I used in the 1600 kwh range this time last year. I think this is going to be the hottest summer on record when it's all said and done up here in D/FW. I saw the number of 100 degree days up here on the news the other day and we were only one behind 2011 at the end of July when it was the worst I think. By the end of the summer, we are going to easily top the number of 100 degree days all-time from what I've seen...unless something changes here. But, August and September are supposed to be the hot months...not freaking June and July. Whatever. It could be worse.
SMH... this is the kind of stuff you need to do to shop for an electricity plan (been there). Glad I locked in a 3 years plan in 2020.
July and August are the hottest months around here. Based on NOAA data I was looking at earlier, July was the 2nd hottest July up here since 1900 in terms of average daily temperature. The average daily temp was 91.8 in July. In 1980 it was 92.0, in 1998 it was 91.6, and in 2011 it was 91.4. If you want to look at the average high temperature in July, it was again, the 2nd hottest behind 1980. The average high temp this year was 102.4, it was 105.3 in 1980, 102.4 in 1998, 101.9 in 1954, and 101.7 in 2011. If you want to look at total number of days >= 100 degrees it was 4th behind 1980, 2011, and 1998. Total number of days over 100 in 1980 was 31, in 1998 there were 28, in 2011, there were 30 in 2022 there were 27. Yes, I was bored this afternoon, and yes, it was a hot July no matter what.
Last month, with three households on one bill.... 3600kwh used 1800kwh solar production .11 per kwh rate... $30 in normal bs fees $230 bill with very little solar power making it back to the grid. Hot month, huge power draw.
It's been a HOT July. We moved here from Houston in 1980 and this is the hottest July I can remember. Apparently, I wasn't having a "flashback." Quick edit - our water bill is higher than our electric bill from attempting to keep our grass from dying. It's more brown than green, but hanging in there. I'm not religious, but God bless the Pedernales Electric Coop and damn the City of Austin's water utility! From KXAN news here in Austin: The past seven days — July 7 through July 13 — are now in the books as the hottest 7-day stretch ever recorded in the city, with records dating back to the 1890s. The average temperature during that period, which includes both the high and low temperatures each day, was 92.9°.
All the plans I sign up for are just straight forward. No difference in price based on use. https://www.discountpowertx.com/files/09017518830b74f4.pdf Base: $0 Energy: 5.3c - the only number i came about... Delivery: 3.8c + $4.39 monthly (standard for everyone) 9.1c + $4.39.... Past plan (2018-2021) was 5.86c for energy through Discount also.
I still don't get it. Repeat customers usually get a worse deal than the original one they signed up for. With all power companies offering rates that start at $13 cents kwh with the higher energy prices, you're telling us you locked in rates under 10 cents per kwh at this time with a simple phone call? Did you renew before all the energy prices went up? You're in Texas...right?
I try to renew early in the year (jan/feb) but last year my plan expired around May. I went online and clicked renew and picked a new plan around march...not sure why it let me.....lol It said it will take effect when my plan expired..I didnt care as long as I was able to lock in that rate for 3 years. We will cross that bridge when we get there. Depending on how prices are a few months before my next expiry, I will try to leave Discount (take the $75 hit for termination) or lock in a new plan again. Yes, in houston. HOLY ****. I just looked at the current rates: Wise Buy24 Get a great low price for two full years Fixed 24 Months $295 Cancellation Fee Electricity Facts Label (pdf) 26.9 ¢ per kW
It's really just down to bad timing for those who have to renew right now. Natural gas is at an insane price right now. I renewed in Sept 2021 and was able to get a flat 5.8 c/kwh + center point fees for 36 months with Eligo energy. I just found the plan on PowerToChoose with a Houston zip code.
Our contract ended 3 months ago, went from 9 cents to now 16 cents, getting our first ever electric bills over 300. Now the same plan is being advertised at 25 cents, an enormous jump
do you recall how much difference dollar wise between 9 cents and 16 cents for the same monthly usage?
I got new insulation and double pane windows to reduce my light bill by alot. Good investment that pays for itself
Yeah don't forget now you get tax credit for it also. If you install new energy-efficient windows, doors, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, and the like. It's a great time for home upgrades. It's crazy how nobody knows.
