What does the OEM mean in "WinDVD 5 OEM version", or for any software? Does that mean it's the standard version? I am trying to find a cheap copy of WINDVD5 or PowerDVD5, that has support for 5.1 audio etc. I foudn some good deals on Ebay, but they have OEM written as the version. I don't want to buy them if they don't support dolby 5.1, my audio card supports it but the decoder must also right? Sorry if this post doesn't make much sense, but I have searched online through yahoo and other sites trying to figure what OEM means. From what I can tell, I must buy the gold or deluxe versions to get 5.1 support. But I am just not sure. This says the standard version has multi channel support for audio. I like PowerDVD, I don't use it much though. I just use Media Player Classic OEM is just the barebone cd, no box or manual just a white sleeve with the cd in it
I was reading about media player classic on I think videohelp.com or something like that. It says it comes with a dvd codec, as free ware. Is MPC any good? Thanks for the info Kaiser, so I guess OEM should support the multichannel audio, since it is the regular copy just with no box etc., I don't care for the box and such. I just want the software. I am trying to decide between Powerdvd and Windvd.
PowerDVD has a trial download or the standard version I would d/l that and see if you get what you want. I bought a OEM PowerDVD off of eBay for like $6.00 and I like it. It is the standard edition and this is what it has:
try out VLC player, its also free and plays everything (even DAT files) and should decode 5.1, DTS, ac-3 try it out and see if it suits you before you commit to PowerDVD or WinDVD maybe you can save a few bucks http://www.videolan.net/vlc/
FF: cool. What version of PowerDVD was that? I am trying to get a copy that supports 5.1 etc. I don't know much about DVD software on pc's. SO I am having a hard time trying to find out which ones do, for a price lower than $20.

Yeah I'm using VLC. It's a great free software that got all the codec. I couldn;t play some mpg file with PowerDVD.
I have PowerDVD 5 Standard, I was looking at upgrading their "Power Pack" to DTS (which I believe is what is necessary for Dolby 5.1) and it's $25.00 for the upgrade. I only have onboard 16 Bit audio so...I don't think upgrading is smart for me, but good luck.

I didn't see the answer to the question, so here it is: Original Equipment Manufacturer OEM software is primarily supposed to be included with a new PC, rather than sold retail.
