Probably, but not necessarily. There is about a 1:3 chance that the Rockets get Wemby or Henderson. Getting either of those players will cover a multitude of incompetence by the front office and ownership. The most likely outcome this off season is that Silas is fired, and if that is the case, there is a chance the Rockets actually end up with a coach that is competent at holding players accountable. There is also a chance that Tilman is tired of Stone and replaces him with someone more experienced....... Then again it is also just as likely or more that the Rockets get the #5 pick and use it on a player that never becomes a really good player, that Stone stays and that the Rockets give mediocre players long contracts....... and the Rockets are winning 40 games a year in 2-3 years.
In Gleague if he ain't careful.. But seriously, it's OK to have your rookie that's offensively underwhelming , sit behind a proven guy.. He can still average about 20-25 mpg playing backup PF, C, and SF .. McHale made the HOF as primarily a backup ( I think) . That was before my time.. I'll ask @DD .. lol
The new coach, if it's a veteran (unless it's a flunky) is not going to stand for the "starter-as-of-right" hereditary titles the Rockets have bestowed upon their recent draft picks and is going to clear out dead wood - not necessarily for Collins but for players of his ilk. People like @DatRocketFan and others who think a new coaching staff is just going to polish up the preexisting **** sandwhich and get everything back on track (while somehow, also, tanking for high draft picks ) are, as I said a few weeks ago, in for a rude awakening.
This is another thing that makes the play in so dumb. It has folks thinking that this is some kind of milestone to make as if its some kind of success story. Folks want to cry like Pat Bev like you accomplished winning a title? The play in is a joke. Adds 2 more loser teams that have no shot at actually winning
Trading for John collins with 1st round picks when we are a 11 win team just bc some folks can't handle losing is in for a rude awakening when we are stuck with his contract and have improved to a 20-30 win team. Big whoopeedooo If this team is a preexisting sht sandwich, adding some extra toppin (John collins) for more money (assets) is sure to make u eat it up huh.
Collins needs to change up his game like Aaron Gordon did this season - play primarily inside and hustle/cut more, cut down midrange and 3s drastically.
I’d love this to happen just so this guy relinquishes his fandom and take his agenda twitter somewhere else.
Y’all dooming and glooming about adding Collins or Russell and the mediocrity treadmill. The only thing that will make us a true contender is if Green, Smith or the 2023 FRP becomes a top 5 player. You’re not going to get that guy in FA or a trade. Those additions need to be above average players to semi star type players because the real stars are resigning for more $. Collins, Turner, LaVine, Russell, Anunoby, FVV these are the talent levels we should be striving for. Need to add at least two like this by next season. Likely by cashing in the BKN picks. Add two of those guys to Green, Jabari, Sengun, Scoot/Wemby and one of those drafted guys becomes top 5 then you’ve got a contender.
What we know is that Tilman Fertitta doesn't want to give high draft picks to OKC. We also know that he and Stone intend to end the tanking after this season. The Rockets will have had three high lottery picks and cap space. The question isn't whether the Rockets SHOULD try competing next year, because the owner has already decided he wants to start competing next year. We also know that Stone will get heat, and he will try to save his job by getting Silas fired. The coach we get will have pressure to win right now. That means that the Rockets WILL be spending cap space and we also know that great players will not sign here because of the losing and good players will only sign here if we vastly over pay them. John Collins is a lot better player than the players the Rockets will have available to them. Jabari Smith is certainly capable of playing SF and getting some minutes at PF. Collins also is historically a good three point shooter as well, so he can easily play next to Jabari. Defensively it is a major upgrade when Collins plays the 4. Smith/Collins/Eason/Sengun are a good start for being competitive at the 3-5 If the Rockets get Wemby, then Collins is a perfect compliment for Sengun and Smith.... if the Rockets get Henderson, then Collins is a perfect trailor for Henderson. Not to quote the corpse of Rick Pitino's boner - but "Larry Bird's not walking through that door."
2 seasons ago, I wanted this trade. Not now. I don't like it, Skip. Nope, Skip. Jabari takes a leap, We draft Wemby then what happens to Collins, a gazillion dollars on the bench collecting dust.
Collins needs to take more 3's and he already has shown he will be a hustle player and cutter.... the problem is Atlanta doesn't use him that way.
Ok, so I agree with your macro point (incremental improvement in order to avoid conveying a lottery pick to OKC in 2024). However, is Collins really going to move the needle that much and even if he does, is NOW the time (vs at the end of the season)?
Probably a good trade considering the rockets need more interior defense moving Segun to PF, and Smith to SF. Would propel some wins, this team needs help.
If the Rockets get Wemby? Then that only makes the Collins deal BETTER, because he can play a lot of minutes at PF, where he is a good defender. Jabari Smith is more than capable of playing SF defensively, I would argue that only HELPS him.... the Rockets would have a massively long front line. There are 132 minutes between 3-5 .......... those minutes can be split between Wemby, Collins, Sengun, Smith and Eason..... With Wemby's size you aren't going to want him to play heavy minutes anyway.
Read @Nook posts - the answer to "does he move the needle," is probably yes - because the Rockets needle is literally stuck on the left side of the gauge. Even a competent version of John Collins (not 2018 when he posted all star type numbers) is substantially better than anyone we have on the roster and would add a few more wins (and a few for the Rockets is a lot)
This does nothing to fix the horrible guard play. It would improve the talent level, but not enough for me to really see the point of making a move like this.
Hear this stone...I'll buy 2 tickets (upper bowl) the rest of the year if they make Tate pg This Is vs the 0 I'm planning on buying
