Requiring testing to enter a country isn't the same thing as a ban. Several countries I've been on have required testing and / or proof of vaccination and I've yet to be denied entry. In fact last year when I went to Amsterdam and Singapore I was required to get testing 24 hours before I returned to the US.
In order for it to have any minimal effect, the testing would have to take place pre-departure, and would have to extend to anyone, citizens and non-citizens alike (the virus makes no difference).
Yes I had to predeparture test last year before I came back to the US. I’m a citizen. In that trip I had to test before I left a Singapore to get to Amsterdam and then before I left Amsterdam to get to the US. Because my flight from Singapore to Amsterdam (through Zurich) was more than 24 hours to my fight to the US out I couldn’t use the same test result.
It is interesting to me that conservatives on in D&D appear to be much more active than before. I’m not sure if non conservatives are less active than before. Perhaps it is the phenomenon of people being more vocal when they have something to complain about. In any case, it is interesting. Like here, we have the same 5-6 conservative posters responding to each other, echoing similar sentiment. That’s been the dynamic in other threads too. I’ve kind of lost interest in D & D for the past 3-4 months because each thread is the same. Perhaps because there hasn’t been anything new of importance, and in the grand scheme of things, things are …. ok ish, boringly normal. Inflation flattening with tightening monetary policy. Jobs remain relatively high. Market is down bit. Covid seems to be up domestically, but anecdotally it seems to be weakening/less fatal here. Russia/Ukraine dragging on. Immigration remains a mess. Trump still not indicted.
When life went back to norm early this year (March'22), I said data indicated we will see ~200k yearly covid death going forward, assuming no new deadly variant. We hit ~260k covid death this year.
Spitballing here, but it’s possible that the Chinese government might be just fine if Covid ended up killing a lot of the elderly population. I have no idea whether that’s ridiculous or not, but it seems the Xi regime can be ruthless. It would certainly run contrary to the wonderful Chinese culture of respecting and valuing the elders, but Xi has a new five year term to do whatever he wants.
