This goes to support my Jim Crane is secretly cheap theory and he throws fans off the scent by dropping a “we will go way over the tax for the right guy” “WS will allow us to spend way more money” and “I fired Click because he was a cheap ass ****ing tightwad and I ain’t about trying to recreate some sort of second rate broke dick Tampa West situation up in here”. The third quote might not be exactly what he said, but something close to that.
Pretty close to accurate. 23 guys is more than necessary imo. It’s 8 arms that’s necessary. Think about our wins and it was the same 4 guys in the bullpen every win. Neris, Abreu, Montero, Presley. Then your 4 starters. The other guys are for games decided one way or another or games that go 18 innings. That **** isn’t super common so you don’t really need to plan for that kind of thing. Then, you obviously need 9 position players. Maybe a specialist or two. But, you probably can skate with 6 of them being above average and 3 being jags, which is more or less what the astros just did (but what they got out of Maldy and the DH crew was well below JAG).
So we’ve made offers to several guys and we’ve been outbid repeatedly. Just sign Conforto to a 2 year deal already.
He's owed $12M each of the next two years. IF they would take a nobody like Kessinger AND eat $8M per year, I would take a flier. But yeah, good luck getting someone to take him without having to eat a chunk of cash. Though for Cohen, of course, salary is just a number.
@Nook is it possible that Hensley could be a bigger factor in next year's lineup? I really liked his approach at the plate and he looked pretty comfortable at the various positions he played. I know it was a small sample size, but could he possibly be one of those late bloomers who really starts to excel with more time in MLB? Also, looks like he played 47 games in CF between college and summer league. Does he have the qualities to perhaps get some time there? Trying to look at wild cards that maybe we're not thinking of, but coaches/staff may be considering. Thanks!
Honestly Diaz and Hensley will make this club out of spring training. Y.Diaz 1B DH COF emergency C. Hensley every where else
I think we take all of Kris Bryant's contract and Zac Veen For Jake Meyers, Phil Maton and a pair of prospects like Joe Perez and Forrest Whitley and call it a day. They rid themselves of that contract and they gain capable starters and prospects in return. It's a win win
Isn't he basically limited to being a DH? Not sure if he played any OF last season. Even if they throw him out in the OF, was he a bad defender?
Agree 100%. I think we’re underestimating the value JV brought simply from a consistent inning eating perspective. Well, about as much as one can underestimate the importance of a Cy Young winner. Having a workhorse like him saved our pen.
Exactly. It’s one thing to be prudent and disciplined but I can’t shake the feeling that Crane at no point will have any intention of actuslly “opening his pocketbook” like we’ve been led to believe. We fired our GM for allegedly not being aggressive enough. We’ve repeatedly heard that Ceane was eager to spend to improve the club. Crane himself has made a point to discuss the specific positions he wanted to improve to the media. But let’s be honest, outside of Abreu, we’re not even being competitive, even on those mission critical positions like catcher where we had viable and cost effective options like Vazquez already in our clubhouse. Meanwhile we’re currently worse today, plus Abreu but minus JV, than we were last year. Like someone else said, we don’t win any awards for being under the luxury tax. Crane and company are making money hand over fist right now. When you have opportunities to improve the team at reasonable cost, stop talking about it and do it.
Which capable starters would the Rockies be getting? You only listed one and he wasn't very capable in 2022.
Meyers can start And Maton can get in the pen. Perez could start if needed may need one more year and Whitley is there wild card
