I love being optimistic but he's 23 and hit .238 in triple A and had an extremely high K rate around 28.5%. That doesn't project out well for the majors as an offensive catcher.
From what’s still available in free agency, and how much Murphy would cost, I’m much more inclined to just bring in a backup defensive catcher and see what happens with Diaz and Lee. The cost/benefit just isn’t out there in the market for anything else. What we are missing is another bat and a competent outfielder.
I agree. Don't spend a ton on the guy who should be your 9th best hitter. It's ok to have .240 with a .330 ob% if you're spending that elsewhere..
We are far more likely to see this as being the loser of a Yordan Alvarez deal. Javier is more likely to be a HOF pitcher than a bust.
I agree. Was exaggerating that while you try to fill holes you have to consider cost in players and salary. Technically the Astros would have fewer holes but their upside would be less as a team.
Yea. I agree with that.. except the #2 Maldy, hits way better, like WAAAAAY better, frames just as good and throws just as well. for that I’m talking about anyone we have been linked to. But if you wanna say vasquez isn’t gonna hit waaaaay better, we’ll he called no hitters so he can do the exact same as #1 maldy plus still better at hitting…
Sign Vazquez , sign the best outfielder available and bring back Brantley.. Call it a day and see ya'll at The World Series Contreras, Judge, Verlander and Turner won't be playing in....
I will agree with Bobby here. Verlander was our best pitcher this last season. Framber was also #1 quality. In the playoffs though, Verlander was like 3rd or 4th. Glad we passed on that contract. We have a deep enough team to win games until the trade deadline if we dont feel like addressing catcher or cf right now.
Let's see. If you are playing the long game. 1. You would drive up the price of free agents knowing that most owners/GMs lack self control. 2. Sign anyone you truly want early. 3. Hem and haw about the market just driving the price too high to add the players FANS want. 4. Preserve capital for the trade deadline where you now have more resources than those who blew through FA without control. 5. Target the player who was unavailable to be traded as the team once again fails with it's stratospheric payroll. 6. Acquire the rental that fills both your TOR and DH roles at the same time. 7. 2023 MLB World Series baby.
Some guys don't think we are great unless we spend huge money on contracts that will end up bad One of the huge reasons we have kept this run going and there is no end in sight, is we have zero big contracts that we are just paying out for no return. We have kept a large payroll without spending stupidly and it works
Astros stick to not paying long contracts which has worked for them so far so I'm okay with passing on Contreras at that contract length. Plus his defense/framing is subpar for a catcher combined with the qualifying offer causing us to lose a pick and $$. I just hope they can sign one of Benetindi, Conforto, Nimmo and Brantley/
2023 playoff roster playing the long game. 2B Altuve SS Pena LF Alvarez 3B Bregman RF Tucker 1B Abreu CF Trout DH Ohtani C Maldonado C2 Lee/Diaz IF Hensley OF McCormick/Meyers SU Leon SP1 Javier SP2 Valdez SP3 Ohtani SP4 McCullers SP/LR Garcia SP/LR Brown CL Pressly R2 Abreu R3 Montero R4 Neris R5 Stanek R6 Martinez R7 Whitley The financial reserves are to pick up Trout's contract which is too high, even for a very good player on the wrong side of 30. 6 WAR player paid like an 8 WAR player. Absorbing that is the incentive to part with Ohtani. Let this be Luhnows move as GM since it's his brand.
You say this about Contreras but you want Nimmo will had a QO and will get at least 5 years and $20m a year? A low key move imo would be Profar and resign Vasquez.
