Am I wrong in looking at this like a 1 year extension with 3 team options? I realize that years 2 and 3 aren't normal team options, but they are functionally similar.

This. This is a big bet on the talent being worth it and likely even more than worth it from a talent perspective considering he would be a RFA. I hope the Rockets are right on his talent.

Yes that's exactly what I stated and why the Rockets did this, it makes absolute sense why we would do this deal. Almost zero long term risk, huge upside.

No NBA player normally lets his career be put on a string like this if there was a healthy market for him. The doubts go far beyond his statline.

I hope the last part of your statement is true.

Hopefully this helps him just focus on becoming the best backcourt with Green. I really think they can be special

KPJ probably understands him leaving at halftime a year ago still considers him a flight risk

I think this is the teams way of letting him know they believe in him but also letting him know no more bullshit. I imagine as maturity continues on/off court the money will continue to improve as well

Agree with this sentiment. You would think KPj will be even more focused knowing he has $15mil coming his way but can earn even more if he just keeps producing and improving. Definitely best of both worlds for him. Was worried how the pressure of a payday would get to him this season but now he can just focus on balling and reaching his potential. I like how Stone is pretty proactive with some of these contracts lately rather than waiting for Free Agency to hit.

At first glance it seems like a perfect deal for the Rockets and continues the opportunity of a lifetime for KPJ.

With the cap about to skyrocket this deal makes sense for KPJ. He gets another contract at the perfect time. Keep rehabilitating your image and make the efficiency magnets happy and BOOM he's going to be near a max when this contract runs its course (hopefully). If not team can cut him and you guys can throw a parade!

KPJ showing massive growth as an individual with signing this extension and good on the Rockets for basically telling him that they like his direction but are still tentative due to his history. Just a win/win scenario for both parties. I like what I've seen from him this pre-season and I really like that he didn't try to hold out for a better deal, which he easily could have. At least something more guaranteed. Shows maturity on his part. Also starts the season off on a good note and lets the other players know that they'll take care of their guys.

Gordon expires after this year .... trade him or not they still have ~$55m in cap space.

The cap is expected to be $134m making the mini max $33.5m (25%) and the supermax $46.9m (35%)

They'll have the $$$ to add talent.

look at what Tyler herro and Poole got lol. Kpj is just as talented as they are. And not only did kpj agree to less but his contract isn’t even fully guaranteed wtf.I had no idea the nba gave out nfl type contracts. Tilman is a cheap pos who makes a living handing out 4 yr vet min contracts to his players.

Hard to argue with the deal from the Rockets perspective.

    Herro just got 4 years $130m ($32.5m/yr) and Poole got 4 years $140m ( $35m/yr).

Neither guy is a star and you get Porter for 2/3 of their price with less than $16m guarenteed? What's not to like?

Now, from Porter's perspective? Likely means there wasn't any interest elsewhere.

After this season, it also sets KPJ up as a valuable trade chip if needed. Fair yearly salary and no guarenteed salary. That helps mitigate a lot of risk.

kpj was already taking below market value. The least tilman could was fully guarantee scoots contract. This is a bad sign when you can’t afford to pay one of youre main pieces their value even when that player does you a solid and takes a discount
