However, I would like it to be the type where the engine just charges the batteries and it runs only on battery power. I small SUV like CRV sized, anyone have any experience with a plug in hybrid and what did you like or dislike about it? Thanks, DD
I have a second gen Chevy Volt and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. In the Summer, I get roughly 55-60 miles of range which is more than enough for my daily commute. And having a gas motor, means getting the benefit of a rapid fill up when needed but honestly I only use gas on roadtrips. Within the city, I'm pretty much running on battery exclusively. As for SUVs, there are a decent number of options now. Kia and Hyundai both make multiple SUVs with PHEV now. Toyota has the Rav4 PHEV and I think Lexus has an equivalent. And Ford has the Escape PHEV. And if you want to pay more, Volvo is now releasing every model as a PHEV now.
How often does the 2nd gen Volt make you go through a engine maintenance mode if you don't use enough gas? I was just curious, because that's the only thing I'd think would be important - ie getting up to highway speed on gas every once in a while to prevent future engine/maintenance issues with the IC engine. Obviously if the maintenance mode does a good job then I wouldn't worry about it, but was just wondering since I'll probably get one at some point. I haven't worked on hybrids or EVs yet but find them pretty neat.
All I know is the Volvo XC90 recharge with the Bowers and Wilkins stereo is the finest car audio I’ve ever heard.
It'll force you onto maintenance mode every 2-3 months but I started turning on the gas for stretches on the highway every now and then. Once I started doing that, I haven't seen the engine maintenance pop up in a while. But overall, the ICE maintenance mode seems to do its job. I've had no issues with the ICE thus far when I've had to actually use it. You also do have to do an oil change every couple of years as well even though the engine is barely used. Also one thing to note is that the Volt is one of the earliest PHEVs so I'd imagine that newer cars are much smoother when it comes to maintenance.
Very nice, that's what I was thinking on the maintenance mode/gas use. I just thought it would be better to confirm with an actual owner of the car. Thanks for the information!
I hope he answers you because if he doesn’t you won’t ever have a way to find out the answer yourself online.
I have looked at it, I am hoping some folks have some personal history with these things......I have none. DD
There are plenty of YouTube car reviewers that you can do your research on. FWIW, my RAV4 Prime fits my needs better than any current vehicle.
Have been looking at one of these Solo. or one of those trike sport 2 person car/bikes. If I had to go into the office more than twice a week, I’d prolly more seriously crunch the numbers. Watching gas prices and everything else go up makes the Tundra into a drive way princess. https://www.electrameccanica.com/solo/
Looking for my wife, she works less than 2 miles away, and literally spends most of her driving in our area, 20 or so battery miles probably means very little gas usage for the year......and we are going to get SOLAR installed all over our garage, and carport....with a battery wall. DD
