I just found out quite a few of my friends have Covid currently. We are young so no major side effects, but this strain must be insanely contagious.

Thankfully everyone I know who was vaccinated and got sick over last week have had minor illness.
One friend who wasn’t vaccinated (40, just heavy enough to be obese) now has trouble breathing with moderate exercise (jogging) and still can’t smell or taste.

Olympics ended in early August, which was very likely before the spread of Omicron. Japan identified their first case of community spread of Omicron just 4 days ago. So they're at least a month behind US and the European countries. By the time Omicron was identified as a variant that could be dangerous in late November, it was definitely already in the US and many EU countries.

Though considering that Japan had their first case of community spread Omicron, I'd be very surprised if they don't see a surge in a month. Though the surge may not be as bad due to the mask usage and vaccination percentage.

Vaccines were designed around OG SARS-CoV-2. They worked with delta. Omicron has a much higher chance of escape from infection and vaccine induced immunity. But both prior infection and vaccination appear to dampen to the severity of illness.

Requiring proof of vaccination before omicron was a great idea.

Too bad a sizable minority of people are too stupid to wear masks properly to this day. I still see people wearing it like a chin diaper. Masks don’t work if people are not using them properly.

And why do you give a **** about mask mandates. I am sure you live somewhere where people aren’t wearing them as a sign of bravery (or due to sheer apathy).

Or maybe they do, given that hospitals aren't overwhelmed there. We'll see when this wave hits other states how their hospitalization and death rates compare. If it's anything like the delta wave, it will again show that vaccinations and restrictions work to keep people alive, which seems to be the #1 reason for government to exist.

How old are these people wearing chin straps ?
It’s pretty obvious it’s not a bunch of old people who watch cable news and it’s all young people who would go to Astroworld fest

The whole point of masks, social distancing, and vaccine mandates are to protect the unvaccinated - not the vaccinated. Yet it's the unvaccinated who cry the loudest can call it tyranny and pointless. The reason for it is to prevent hospital systems from being overwhelmed which they are. It's not good as it's breaking a lot of the medical system in ways that will have repercussions for decades - namely even worse care for most people as health care professionals quit.

That said, Omicron is so contagious, it's clear that masks no longer are reducing the ro below 1 or even near 1. They are completely ineffective. So are quarantines really.

I think it's time to eliminate the covid mandates and quarantine rules, and mask for that matter. People had 2 years to get vaccinated. If they want to role the dice at this point, let them. Omicron is much milder than Delta anyway and it's much harder to control transmission.

Let Omicron run amok and run its course now. We're through the worst of it and in a way, we got lucky with Omicron. Time for the right to find a new punching bag to pretend like they are being oppressed.

Me and my wife have it now. Tested positive A couple of days ago. Sat in a waiting room full of people. No one there looked really sick. I had chills aches and bad headache. It’s already mostly gone. It was like a mild case of the flu.
