Tower climber finally descends from perch on Westpark Tollway



A man who climbed atop a 180-foot utility tower along the Westpark Tollway, forcing police to shut down the westbound lanes for five hours, has finally come down this afternoon.

Police said the man will be taken to the Harris County Psychiatric Center for evaluation.

Police were called to the tollway near Gessner around 10 a.m. when a barefoot man who had been walking along the tollway began his ascent of the tower. Apparently he shimmied up the tower for the first 12 feet before reaching the tower's ladder.

After he climbed too far for the firefighters' ladders to reach, authorities tried to talk him down. He started to climb down a few times before changing his mind and climbing back up. He finally climbed down all the way around 3:15 p.m.

CenterPoint Energy, which owns the tower, had to cut the power to two 345,000-volt transmission lines as a safety precaution, but a utility spokeswoman said no customers were affected.

The tollway was shut down between Gessner and Fondren during the standoff, but it's now reopened.
