I'm having a problem with my fish. I keep missing some. I started my tank out with a pleco, 3 swordtails, and 2 danios. Well the two female swords passed and the male went missing and I never could find him. Next I had the pleco, the 2 danios, a cory, and 5 mini neons and have had this setup for 3 months. I look in the tank when I get home from work today and notice there are only 2 neons left. WTF??? I've looked all in the tank and cannot find them anywhere. I then thought they may be able to jump out of hole where the filter is but I haven't found them on the floor anywhere. The pleco is the only fish in the tank big enough to even try to eat these other fish but I don't recall plecos being meat eater ever, do they sometimes turn to flesh eaters or what because I cannot explain the missing fish any other way.

Somebody or something is eating your fish.

Did they swim up your filter tube into your filter where they are currently being digested after failing to stop the filter with a gravel rock only to escape? LOL.

You got the sequel to "Finding Nemo" on your hands. That's weird. Do you have a cat?

I do have a cat but I seriously doubt he is the culprit.

If it's a pictus, then yes, he could be the culprit. If it's the cory you're talking about, then no, I doubt it.

I'm gonna agree with Smeg. Or check your filters to see if they're floating in there. lol.

Pun I'm sick of your threads. :)

i have a heavily planted tank so if a fish dies often i don't see it for a while, especially if the filters are freshly clean and causing a strong current that they and i like.....

obviously most fish aren't killer but most can't resist eating a tank mate when they are already dead

    OK. :)
What Smeg and the good Dr said was on the money. If they're of any size at all, a pictus is a happy bottom feeder of whatever will fit in it's mouth, especially at night. My guess is that your missing fish were small enough to decompose and get lost in the gravel/sucked up in your filter. They're also small enough to get lost in the carpet or under some furniture if they jumped and hopped around. Since you've got a cat and he's probably a bit curious about the tank, he could easily snack on anything that jumped. It's probably a combination of events designed by the Fish Gods to keep you on your toes. :p

Keep 'em coming, Lil Pun. Your questions are one of my favorite things that pop up from time to time. (no doubt for our other fish people as well. :) edit: excepting the Dr, lol!)

In all seriousness though I just cannot imagine where the fish are going. I wonder if my girlfriend flushed them down the toilet or if something may have happen when I added water to the tank last night? Anyway I am short 3 neons and I can't find them.

    Ain't it lovely? :D

Lil Pun, just how small were these neons? If they were "babies", they are amazingly apt to croak on you. Once they get some size, and the water conditions are good, then they should be hardy buggers.

And dude! You haven't asked your lady if she spotted them?

(she's secretly plotting to drive you mad... haven't you caught on yet?? bwahhahahahaha!)

check your filter input tube...neons are small enough to fit in most of them.

you might want to wrap some mesh around the filter tube if you are gonna keep small fish like that.

I dont see any in your tank that would eat any live fish, but they would definitely eat them dead.

How big is your tank? You might be overcrowding your tank, and if that is the case, then one of your fish is probably eating the others in order to create more space for the ones left behind. My angelfish used to eat my neons all the freaking time, but then again, angelfish are aggressive.

    they are not.

well...maybe a little....but only to each other..its a territory/status thing with angels....the fish would have to be MIGHTY small or the angels MIGHTY large to have the angels eat the other fish...since angels have a very small mouth..

you want to talk about a fish that eats others...Ill show you a pic of my footlong.................................................................................................

Ok I agree, that mostly they aren't but mine were for some reason. There were 3 angels and probably a dozen neons in a 35 gallon tank, and I would always see one of the angels going after the neons. And their mouths were definitely large enough to eat those neons. Maybe I just had bullies for fish.

as with all animals, you really cant apply a in general label to all of them...;)

for the most part....Angels are considered as "mildly aggressive"...

I keep 4 veiltail Angels with 9 longfin rosy barbs and 4 clown loaches and a cory cat....have been looking for one other kind to compliment my existing fish....but I would never go with neons...they are just way to small.....maybe some different kind of tetras....or danios...maybe even some Aussie rainbows..

    anyway.
