The "assault" weapons ban, not one Cheech and Chong movie, Ruby Ridge, Austin ruined by growth -- largely from transplants from Silicon Valley who bring smoking bans, the Amiga computer died, the rise of AOL, Cowboys win more Superbowls, failure of the Oslo Accords and the dawn of the new Intifada.

The Rabin assassination, the rise of Islamic terror and the underwhelming reponse by the western world, the internet bubble (and it's pop) and the lame and unstable business culture that it cultivated -- like all the free stuff starting to disappear, the media treating the planet to a Michael Jordan enema no matter who was actually winning NBA Championships.

The movie "Independance Day" , the Yankees and Lakers start attracting bandwagoners again, the Oilers move to Tennesee, slavery in Sudan and Mauritania, the IRS goes after Willie Nelson, Branch Davidians, suddenly its cool to like hockey.

Underachievment by the US in the 98 World Cup, it becomes cool for affluent teenagers and college kids to dress like gas station attendents and other workign class people, yet continue to mock them, cellphone saturation increases inversely with cellphone etiquette, everyone stops making slacks without pleats except Dickies and department stores in Mexico, Elian Gonzalez, rear wheel drive sedans with big engines start becoming an endangered species, only to be replaced by underpowered SUV's that are glorified jacked-up station wagons.

*OJ*, Columbine, Rodney King/ LA Riots, suburban white kids with really, really stupid tattoos, the Star Wars prequel, Barney, Rosie O'Donnell's 15 minutes of fame, obesity on the rise, J.R. Richard found under a bridge, US loses Canal Zone, Britain loses Hong Kong, US continues embargo on Cuba, Castro responds with longevity.

Arafat wins a Nobel Peace Prize, cultists attack Tokyo subways, girbaud jeans, no corner in America is safe from Starbucks and Blockbuster Video, no new music from Kinky Friedman, David Beckham costs England a World Cup exit in a quarterfinal vs. Argentina, denying Alan Shearer and Paul Gasciogne any chance at a World Cup.

Akira Kurosawa dies, media frenzy surrounding death of Princess Di proves that real journalism is all but dead dead, Karl Malone's bearhug on Drexler...that's all I can think of a the top of my head, but I think its enough.

On the bright side:

the growth of the internet (in the sense of content)

You forgot to add the 1990 WC were England lost to Germany on penalty kicks.
And FYI the Barras y Estrellas(US) are going to win the WC before England!

Can't forget the Mini-Truck Mullets that ruled the early 90's.

They were the guys who would wear sweaters on top of sweaters with a turtleneck underneath and a gold chain worn on the outside with a mullet that appeared to be cut while the MTM was wearing a ballcap.

And they always had lame minitrucks that were painted flourescent colors.
