And yes it is correct that at the time it was seen as a risky trade, primarily for all the picks and swaps that were given up. Again it was a gamble, one that didn't work out, that was primarily focused on placating a disgruntled diva of a superstar (you don't think Morey tried telling Harden trading for Westbrook was a bad idea?) and betting that Westbrook's play/longevity would be more valuable than what seemed like Paul's rapid decline at the time. Keep in mind Morey was a degenerate gambler who kept tinkering and taking risks -- it worked some times and didn't work other times. Yes this Westbrook trade wasn't his doing, but sitting still (keeping Paul) wasn't the M.O. of a Morey-led team. This version of Paul would look great in 2021 with Harden and Capela, but let's be realistic and say Capela still gets hurt in 2020: Houston's not winning the title last year and Paul and/or Harden are still traded in 2021. The question, to me, isn't whether Houston would be competing for a title today; rather it's what return would they have gotten for Paul had the initial trade not occurred? Ultimately where the draft pick lands in the lottery this year is what will determine whether the Paul trade was an ultimate disaster or whether it spurred a [hopefully] quicker rebuild. If the Rockets end up with the top pick and someone like Cade is the real deal then personally I'll view the Westbrook trade as more of a wash than a disaster.
nobody needed hindsight to know cp3 for westbrick was just dumb from day 1. I along with a handful of others have said that from the beginning the moment it happened. And that includes clutch. you traded for a worse player and worse fit. and you added picks on top of that. there was never any silver lining in that scenario Keep cp3 wasn't a mo of morey, yet once he got to Philly he tried to trade for him immediately. only way holding CP3 out could be justified is if he actually has Covid right now Would he be out for an indefinite amount of time if he had just simply broken protocol?
