    I think that the further out of playoff contention a team is, the less they'd be willing to give up.

    The Nets gave up what they did for a chance to contend this year and next year. If they waited until the trade deadline, they wouldn't reasonably expect to still contend this year....only next year. So why would they offer a better trade package for a lesser return?

    Could have traded him over the summer, but the FO, and many idiots on this board, said "don't trade him."

    Even after he made it pretty clear he wasn't interested in staying.
