Anyone psyched about the release of this? Supposedly hailed as the most anticipated game, ever.

I'm planning on getting a new graphics card just around the time this game comes out, so yes I'm pretty psyched. But none of these games really matter anyway because they are all going in the closet when Halo 2 comes out in September.

I still remember playing the original DOOM and Descent at one of my first jobs during lunch and afterhours. It's not really my type of game, but I may just get it for nostalgia's sake if nothing else. Carmack is a freaking genius.

Look at the one on the right scurrying toward you in the shadows. That's pretty creepy.

I remember when the beta level of this game leaked to the public. I played it on my machine, but it managed to get something like a whopping 6 fps. I know it hadn't been optimized or anything, but it was obvious I would need an upper tier system to really enjoy it. The lighting in particular seems highly impressive. The way the shadows fall true, moving as light sources move and as objects turn and increase in size. You can do some really eery stuff with that kind of lighting.

That said, my favorite FPS ever is Doom 2, partly because of the excellent puzzles they created on the limited game engine, and partly because of the huge body count in that game. The sheer number of enemies seems to have dwindled as graphics get better and better, and that's a shame. I'll probably wait and hear how this game rates before I consider getting it.

Those shots look really, really prerendered to me, but they say they're so supposed to be the real-time graphics?

If so, that's great, I'll take it, awesome to see what're they're capable of now...

I'm waiting, but for some reason I'm more eager for Half Life 2.

How many people are going to be able to afford the ultra-expensive graphics card that can play it?

The reason I ask is because I still have a system without a 3d card and have been thinking about getting a GeForce FX 5500 or 5900, but am having a hard time justifying paying over $100 for a card.

Sorry RP, I understand what you're saying believe me; but if you're not into paying over 100 for a video card, you might as well not bother with much PC gaming.

D3 is an extreme example (at least we think so; nobody knows much about actual specs/requirements), but for the most part you need some pretty good hardware to play any of the decent stuff. And that means a least a little more over 100 bucks.

Doom 3 is going to be an extreme example, most PC games won't be this graphics intensive for probably a year or two. If you go to http://www.anandtech.com/ and read through their Video Card section, they have some really good articles.

I think I'm going to wait for PCI Express to come out later this year, no sense buying an AGP graphics card right now, unless you can get a bargain.
