On the west side Pappy's on I-10 near kirkwood (was off I-10 and cambell for 25+years) provides excellent food at a reasonable price. Their Chicken Fried Steak is one of the best in the state.
Any suggestions for similar places in Austin? We found out yesterday that one of our favorites for years, Eastside Cafe, has closed. The owner retired. It couldn't be that they weren't making money since it was very popular. Two could eat really good organic food (and not just vegetarian) for about $30 or less. My guess is that they were offered a pile of money for their property and couldn't turn it down. A real bummer. We keep losing places like that. The Frisco Diner on Burnet closed for good during the last year, and they had been around forever in one building or another. Anyway, looking for more good eateries, folks, if anyone knows of some around Austin.
I used to take several routes that would bring me right by their old location so it was a great excuse to stop. I think the new location is right off Dairy Ashford and I never have a reason to be over there. Been there only once at the new location. Pappy's it tops.

A little over your budget but PJ's near Montrose has steak night every Thursday. Two steaks, two potatoes, Salad and a pitcher of Ziegenbock or Lonestar for $35 If you're near one Kona Grill has a mean Happy hour with $5 food and $2 domestics. They have sliders, sushi rolls, chicken kabab.
Yeah, I go to the one at Baybrook a lot. Oh and I forgot about McCormick and Schmick's. They have a good happy hour too with a $5 burger, fish tacos and $7 Poke bowl. $1 oysters on Wednesday.
Deck.. I didn't know you were here in Austin! I like: Top Notch (best burger in town and also reasonable) Phonatic (Pho, sit down, but no fuss at all because you order up front) La Concina de Consuelo Maru Japanese (not actually THAT cheap but decent prices on good sushi) El Patio (repeatable regular place for my gf and I) T22 (spicy fried chicken) Thai Kitchen (their Tom Ka soup rocks... add tomatoes if you like them) Chekos (heard it's good) Tavern (bar food) Asia Cafe (can't recommend this enough if you're adventurous and appreciate authentic chinese) Halal Bros Hoffbrau (decent steak, decent price) What's on your list?
Lol. He's pretty much always been in Austin. BTW, who has tried the Steak at Beck's Prime? Seems crazy to have a $40 steak at a place with a drive through. Always wondered how it was.
Waaaaaaa.. I love happy hour lol I have a spot I got to called el jardin that has $1 import drafts. Corona, XX, modelo. Food ain’t all tho. Thanks for the info
Les Givral in downtown. Aladdin's for mediterranean is amazing! so is Niko Nikos across the street in Montrose. And if you want great breakfast for fraction of the cost, Tel-Wink Grill is the place to go. Minimum 30 min wait usually but worth it.
