LOL that's either an outright lie or someone who simply doesn't know what they are talking about. My guess is that it's an outright lie.

Open borders isn't really a thing. I have rather noticed, as polarization has struck the immigration debate and eliminated any space for nuance, that many people who are pro-immigration either adopt a simplified rhetoric on borders or else don't bother responding to accusations that they want open borders, which allows the white nationalists to get away with this accusation that they are open border extremists. But, if there is a real blue wave and Democrats grab a bunch of power (including their unabashed democratic socialists), you're still not going to see any legislative effort to have open borders. We might want to make some kind of functional guest worker program, maybe increases to immigration, maybe a path to citizenship for longtime illegals in the country or maybe DACA kids. But no, no one has to be afraid that the Democrats are going to abolish borders and allow the hordes to come pouring in. That's not a real thing.

So you are saying essentially to ignore their words because they don't really mean it when they say they want to abolish ICE and support eliminating borders?

Despite President Donald Trump’s repeated claims, Democrats are not advocating open borders, not even the ones who are calling to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The small minority of Democrats in Congress calling for the end of ICE have all said they would like to have many of ICE’s functions redistributed to other, existing government agencies. None has called for abandoning border enforcement.

Hmmmm, I don't think it is quite correct, or at least what I was trying to say. I think there are 11-12 million illegals here, that's true. But I was thinking of manual blue collar labor, which is going to be mostly men. A good portion of those 11-12 million are going to be women and children. Perhaps, it's mostly men, who came here from another country to work.

Whenever I see men doing this type of work -- construction, roofing, sheet-rocking, tiling, delivering and installing appliances -- it's Hispanic guys doing this. By and large, it isn't Americans doing this type of work, I think.

Also, there was a report in the Chronicle over the past year that the Port of Houston was asking the federal government for exemptions to immigrations restrictions, so they could get more dock/port workers.

Also, I think the farmers in the valley might disagree with you. So, whether we have enough already -- who's to say? I'm not a uber expert on this. I'm reporting what I see with my eyes, and read.

I would say that we here in the Houston area did not have enough labor after Harvey, for sure. People were desperate to find contractors. That tells me we don't have enough people doing this type of work.

Of course Harvey was unusual. But I think that was different only in magnitude, in terms of the demand for services. Harvey just exacerbated the situation, the labor market for these types of jobs, that was already in place. The men that are doing this type of work, by and large, have Hispanic backgrounds.

Are they US citizens? Did they come illegally or legally? Who knows. Do we need their labor? Yes, we do.

Well, okay, some images may be old and therefore fake for this caravan, but look at what a friend forwarded me: this is what happened when the caravan got near a blimp in Mexico! :(

A 1 in 5000 year disaster and there weren't enough workers? You dont say..

What happens when you go a year without one? How much forest is being chopped down for the non stop construction a higher standard of living demands? There is a bottom and once it falls out, the "Hispanic laborers" you mention will suffer the most. No family to support them financially, and no citizenship to pay them welfare. Focus on those who are already in the country first, I assure you they are not all living the high life.

Nice try, B-Bob. However, if those mobs want asylum, let them apply when they get to Mexico, which is an asylum country -- whether there are five or 5,000. President Trump threatening to cut off aid to violating countries is a stroke of genius. The people of those countries are getting a dime (probably closer to a nickel) on a dollar in aid. The dictators skim off the bulk of that aid.

Good to be back, especially in my own thread. I'm now missing a leg, but I have all my fingers. After seeing other people in physical therapy, I count my blessings with ease and humility. Okay, after this Trump stump for Ted Cruz, I will do some stumping myself.

Keep healing. I saw your post saying you needed personal time, but had no idea. Not sure what to say other than keep making progress.

Well, there are other angles to this as well:

    a) Americans won't do these jobs because the alternative of welfare benefits is too attractive.
    b) in some communities of US citizens, there just isn't a work ethic. Sad but true.

At least these laborers from the south, by and large, want to work.

And you misinterpreted my point about Harvey, but then willful misinterpretation seems to be rampant on this board. Harvey exacerbated the trend that was already going on for many years. There: I said it again.

If you are a white American, and Trumps racist fear campaign about the “caravan” frightens you enough to vote for Cruz or other Republicans next month when you otherwise wouldn’t vote......

I’m sorry ... I know we are supposed to be civil and all but you are really really stupid.

I don’t blame this older lady for self centered ignorance as much as I blame FoxNews and the halfway smart Trump fan relative that wouldn’t miss an opportunity like her to tell her she’s taking fox news and trumps portrayal of America way too seriously.

Many of those types of people that are to blame are on this forum. Those who are relatively smart but will never miss a poltical opportunity instead of speaking out to say I support the policy here, but this is just not factual, or not something you want Trump/Fox to be stoking.

You do know that these same jobs were done by Americans back in the day so that's not true.
In some communities there is a very strong work ethic it's just not shown by the media it's just like when a officer does something good it's not always shown.
