In the summer of 1998, just after the draft, Tomjanovich was admitted to hospital after suffering what amounted to a stress-related breakdown. He missed the Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico and then drastically changed his life. He slowed down. He stopped drinking alcohol of any kind. He stopped trying to change the world.
