Who even knows, since it's the lowest level of minor league baseball. I guess if the kids are all registered with the league, they can appear in a game and there's some kind of list showing who's going to dress for a given game.
Speaking of Kit Scheetz, a LHP who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech last year, he now has 33 strikeouts (against 5 walks) in 19.1 innings of work this season. Opponents are hitting .162 against him and he's sporting a 0.81 WHIP. Might be time for him to get challenged in Corpus...
He’s got a BABIP over .500. He’s hitting about the same as he did last year in AAA. I agree he deserves an extended look in the majors but his current AAA slash line is not indicative of a recent improvement.
My desire to see him back in Houston is as much rooted in Gattis' suckiness as it is in Davis' performance.
Meyers was 2-5 with a double, a HR, and 2 SB today. So far in May he’s hitting .290/.389/.645 (1034 ops) with 2 HR and 2 SB. He’s a player without much pedigree who didn’t hit very well in his pro debut. But he’s a very good defensive outfielder with speed who avoids strikeouts and takes walks. If he can figure out how to generate harder contact at a better angle without making big sacrifices elsewhere, he has star upside, and even with just minimal improvement he’s probably a decent big league 4th OF. FWIW, Bostick has a 0.00 era with 9 k and 4 bb in 8.1 Ip so far in May.
Rogelio Armenteros @ Las Vegas: 5 IP, 6 H, BB Jonathan Davis is currently 2-3 with an RBI double and an RBI single.
He would be unlikely to be worse than Gattis and Marisnick have been. But the projections actually predict Gattis to be the more productive mlb hitter going forward; the 4 systems fangraphs uses have Gattis with a projected wRC+ of 95-100 over the remainder of the season, whereas they have Davis with an 89-92.
I think Gattis needs to catch to feel his hitting.... it sucks he isn’t regarded as a better catcher, because him as a DH is a liability. With that said, we have to give Davis another chance, as Gattis is struggling mightily, he’d be the best opportunity for JD to get ML AB’s.
I’d keep Marisnik as he is a defensive specialist and a strong base runner. I think he is quite capable of settling in as a .230 Avg hitter for the season.
• Astros' No. 9 prospect J.D. Davis continued his hot streak with a 4-for-5, two-RBI effort for Triple-A Fresno. Not only is Davis in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak, he's also hitting .450 through 25 games and has multiple hits in nine of the 12 games during his streak. https://www.mlb.com/news/white-sox-trio-leads-top-prospect-performers/c-276076640
Gattis can still catch. I think he has significant value as the potential 3rd catcher over what Davis could provide as the 3rd string backup at 1B/3B/LF. Now, if they decided Davis was solid in LF and wanted to give him a shot there, I’d be cool with that, but that would be at the expense of Fisher’s roster spot, not Gattis.
JD offers so much more positional flexibility/value than Gattis though. The ability to play LF, 1B, 3B or DH is greater than the ability to play C or DH. Also, given the fact that B-Mac and Stasi are firmly the top 2 catchers Gattis essentially won’t ever even have the chance to catch. So I’ll take a guy who can fill in at multiple positions over Gattis.
