I recall in the 70s and 80s in Houston, most gas stations had "self-service" pumps and "full service" pumps. It was more expensive to do full service, but they'd check your fluids and wipe down your windshield. Obviously folks weren't willing to keep that going, because I haven't seen a full service lane here in decades.
4 or 5 years ago I pulled up to the Shell station at Montrose/Richmond, pulled the gas cover release on my car and stepped out only to find an employee standing there staring at me. He pointed to the top of the pump where it said "Full Service". I kind of went blank at that point because I was so flabbergasted that we still had full service gas in Houston, but I think I muttered something and got in the car and drove around to another pump. Then I stared at that first pump like I had just seen a demogorgon. I wonder how many times a day they walk up to that pump only to have someone restart their car and drive to another pump.
Having spent some time in Oregon, I can confess you are correct. I kept defaulting to getting out to pump and here would come a 15-yr-old pimply guy running across the station. Other motorists staring like I was a barbarian outlaw. The attendants always assumed I was just sick of waiting for them, LOL.
Are you insane? Some people aren't capable of getting their own Funyuns and the hazards of not doing it correctly.
