They should have made it a 70's theme party. We wore some funky stuff in the 70's. I don't think we dressed all that much differently in the 80's from how we dress now, maybe brighter colors.

I would suggest dressing like one of these guys.

One Members Only jacket (please note the pushed-up sleeves)



One skinny tie (NOTE: in the absence of a skinny tie, a knit tie can be substituted, provided that it has a square bottom and a gaudy color)





One hypercolor t-shirt (what? A t-shirt WITH A TIE?!? Yup, that's how we rolled in the 80s, yo)



One pair of acid-washed jeans.



One pair of Sperry Topsiders, complete with white soles. NOTE: do not wear socks unless you want to look like a complete tool! The 80s were all about tolerating a little foot odor to look cool.



Mix in generous portions, and you'll be the coolest kid at John Hughes High School.

Thanks for reminding me that 80's music wasn't as bad as I remember. That video/song is a startling example of how bad music has gotten today.


As for the costume... I suggest some corduroy OP shorts or parachute pants as a good base, otherwise, eluvsrox is right on the money.

 

wear a lot of those thin plastic bracelets, or multiple swatches.

 

Another forgotten garment from the 1980's is the "Coca-Cola" shirt.
