Here's my setup: I have 5 computers networked thru a router from a single cable modem. One of the pc's crapped out, so a friend donated a used one. My problem is I can't get this pc onto my network using an ethernet connection. I've tried:
-connecting to pc thru router via ethernet...no go
-connecting directly to pc from modem via ethernet...no go
-connecting thru modem via USB (with ethernet still connected to router for other computers ) ...no go
-connecting thru modem via USB (with ethernet disconnected to router)...this works. I can get online, but none of my other pc's can because the ethernet is disconnected from the modem.
-connecting thru a "LAN to USB" adapter via router and ethernet...no go.

In every case, I get the same error..."One of your network cables is unplugged." The only time I can get online is using the modem USB connection directly to the pc with no other pc's attached. What now?

EDIT: I've tried three different ethernet cards, one of which is brand new.

    What's the operating system?

Sounds like something is tweaking the network settings. Can you get it to work in Safe Mode with Networking? Reboot the computer, start tapping f8 right after the bios screen disappears. You will get a bunch of text options, select Safe Mode with Networking. Try to connect via the network cable then.

It could also be spyware. Run the usual adaware, spybot, etc.

Go to start-run, type CMD, then type ipconfig /flushdns . Reboot.

It could also be that TCP/IP is broken.

In all of the above cases, I would have installed a fresh copy of XP on a new computer.

    Good luck.

I did. Formatted hard drive, installed a fresh copy of XP before doing anything.

this error can happen if the ethernet cable is bad. Use a known good one. And as you've done, continue trying without the router or any other machines. Just try model to pc via ethernet.

also, try seating the ethernet card into a different slot. Plus, pull out all unneeded cards such as sound cards.

also, also, if the ethernet card supports power management, make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not selected. Check the Power Management tab of the card's properties.

also, also, also, you can try changing the link speed and duplex settings (using Device Manager) to use "10 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of Auto Detect.

also, also, also, also,,,do all this in Safe Mode with Networking.

also 5X....call KPFT on Wednesday during the Technology Bytes show. groovehouse/rH answers the phones. He'll set you up.

doing OK. You know I only respond to these puter thingies for friends especially when i know you are doing exactly what i would have done. My advice probably still won't work for you. sigh

from your description, and knowing your capabilities...i really have nothing more to offer. i wish i did.

As far as how I'm doing...i could be doing a lot better if I could be sailing on the bay. This whole raining (ie lightening on the water thing) and no wind is just getting really annoying. Behad....we have not sailed our Hobies YET this year. It is so frustrating...

We are like a 1/2 mile from your place looking for wind.

    it is so sad!!!
