Reagan was referring to an environment with open trade, if he was faced with what China is doing, if his response was just keep trading with them, then he would be asleep at the wheel.

Do you know how China's trade policy works?

This is how it works, China decides how much you sell them, what you sell them, where you sell it to, and when it's sold, that country is state capitalism, the government controls everything, whether they want to buy american or not doesn't matter, it happens if it serves the greater purpose, and doesn't if it does not. As Jack Ma, the creator of Alibaba said, you do what the government tells you to do.

So when people say trade deficits aren't necessarily bad, that is true, rich countries by virtue of being rich will be able to buy more, however as the wealth gap decreases, the trade deficit should also decrease, but instead it's increasing, and that's because of the way China behaves, they don't believe in free trade, they believe in exploitation.

And how do they make this work? They do essentially what the East India trading company did, except not as overtly, they allow a bunch of highly influential and wealthy people and corporations within American society to profiteer, while they plunder your population, slowly, gradually, you all know there's something wrong, some people are getting mega rich, but half the country is going backwards, the western world is de-industrializing, and you have politicians bought and owned who tell you there's nothing that can be done.

Trump's an imperfect tool, i imagine his understanding works like this.

Why is our trade deficit increasing? because they're screwing us
What can be done to stop them screwing us? this stuff
    Ok, do that

But when what do they do with the money they're making? this is where the real fun begins, the Belt and road initative, it's a debt trap, and as John Adams said, you can subjugate by sword or by debt, they've chosen debt. What they do is lend them that money (that they've plundered from you no less), for infrastructure knowing that they can never pay it back, then when they don't, they take over the infrastructure. Just Sri Lanka recently, had to turn over its new harbor, conveniently located right off the coast of India, its regional opponent, but it still can't service what's left of the debt, so what's the wager that next up will be military use of that harbor? Oh and all the ports they've financed, including one right off the coast of the USA, in a country that can't afford to pay it back, guess how that plays out?

It's so partisan that people are posting quotes of Krugman that run completely contrary to the ramifications of his own nobel prize, it's mind boggling how much a shill that guy is (he also said the american economy would crash and burn if trump was elected, but they don't get sacked in "talkie talk" world for being spectacularly wrong, they get given NY times columns, and considered for Clinton's treasury secretary).

They can play the long game, they'll have the same government in 2050, and they're competing against a country where half the population will oppose something that's clearly in their long term interests, because there are some short terms costs, a gotcha media and they hate the oaf whose implementing it.

two takeaways from Aleron's parroting, that he
    • has poor reading comprehension and
    • is ill-informed in history, in particular about Ronald Reagan
    Aleron's poor reading comprehension

he missed these points, made by me, about Japan's unfair trade practice against the US pre-1990s

Aleron's lack of historical knowledge led him to parroting intellectually dishonest articles

because he is ill-informed, he resorts to cutting-and-pasting an article that is built on suppositions upon suppositions,
    and present it as gospel

anyone w even a scant knowledge of Ronald Reagan's presidency knows that he had to deal w Japan's unfair trade practices against the US.
many US lawmakers, some Reps and some Dems, wanted him to punish or start a trade war against Japan

in this video, https://www.youtube.com/530d6e86-97a0-487c-bff7-5f49220b6851 , Reagan referred to them as demagogues

at the G20 summit in Argentina, Xi and Trump had a face-to-face meeting during a 2-hr dinner along w their advisors on Sat, 1 Dec 2018.

a truce for 90 days, not a final resolution, was reached,
    • Trump agreed to pause plans to raise tariffs on $200bn-worth of Chinese goods; he had previously threatened to raise the tariff from the current 10% to 25%
    • Xi, in response, agreed "to buy very substantial amount” of agricultural, energy and industrial goods from the US.

As part of the 90-day truce,

Trump appeared to change its stance on tying the trade talks to security concerns, such as China’s territorial ambitions.
Xi agreed to reconsider a takeover of chinese chipmaker NXP by US company Qualcomm.

reminiscent of the of the movie "The Rich Crazy Asians"

    at the beginning,
the matriarch of the rich / upper crust Singaporean family, Michelle Yeoh's character, was lukewarm to his Singapore-born /
US-based son's fiance, an Economic professor, American born and bred, but not upper crust
    at the end,
she gave her blessing for her son to marry his American born fiance

the dotard started his tariff misstep in ~ Feb 2018, to supposedly close the trade deficit gap

    here is the score board

The Commerce Department said the trade deficit increased 1.7 percent to $55.5 billion, the highest level since October 2008.
The trade gap has now widened for five straight months. Data for September was revised to show the deficit rising to
$54.6 billion instead of the previously reported $54.0 billion.

Maybe he should just stick to what's easy, like healthcare.

The trade gap will increase anyway. The gain here is the billions of tariff money pouring into US government to reduce the debt....

"We are right now taking in $billions in Tariffs. MAKE AMERICA RICH AGAIN" ---- By Donald J. Trump on Dec. 04, 2018

Trump said so. I don't know how poor America was, but it is rich now.

During an interview with NPR's Morning Edition, National Security Advisor John Bolton revealed that

Trump and his team knew about the arrest before attending the G20 dinner w
the Chinese trade delegation who, most probably, knew as well.
the epitome of bad faith from both sides !
