Trump considering executive order to add Census citizenship question

The Supreme Court ruling stated that the administration can have the question if they can convince the courts with another reason that they see as genuine. So there is an avenue where it can be done legally if the courts believe the new reason which I doubt as it would be like a daughter telling her father that she needs the car to go to a party and the father states she can't because she has to study for an exam and the daughter proceeds to change her story to needing the car to study with friends.

However there is an underlying deeper issue here. There really is no avenue for the Supreme Court to enforce its decisions towards a presidential adminstration. We can say "impeachment" bit but we have seen already that impeachment is all about political will power to act, nothing to do with legality. So essentially there is a pretty giant hole in our systems of checks and balances where I can see a clear path towards authoritarianism if a larger enough percentage of constituents allow it. I already know that about 90% of the Marine Corps would be fully abord for a third term for Trump.

 

This power hungry lunatic was already out of control. This is getting dangerous.

Nope. Theoretically impeachment but we have seen that if a president has a stranglehold on a political party and that party controls the Senate, impeachment is useless.

 

If so, this is a small test to the bigger one when trump loses reelection and refuses to step down. Uncharted territory. Even if congress and the court exercise power to remove the president, it’s come down to who would act on the order and if they would. This is the situation you get into when you elect someone that has a tradition of ignoring the court or any body of authority just because he feels it’s wrong.

If he’s thinking that far out, or even if not, it make sense to test it now when the stake is lower. I’m afraid it’s an effective way to gradually beat down the system, normalize authoritarian power, and gain support from the base.

 

It's right wing idiots shooting themselves in the foot again. The census is what determines how much funds should be allocated for things like public utilities. Texas has a large immigrant, legal and illegal, population. This will only decrease funding for public infrustructure in the state.

SCOTUS rulings have been ignored using executive orders in the past by both parties. Abe Lincoln and FDR both ignored SCOTUS with executive orders.

Not sure how I feel about it though. I’m also not sure how asking, what seems like a reasonable question, is a violation of the constitution.

Never has such a benign question ellicited such hyperbolic self-victimization. Sleep well, old man.

 

This isn't really true - the courts can hold people in contempt and literally put them in jail, if they want. It wouldn't be the President, but the people actually carrying out the orders. Career census officials aren't going to do it.

In practice, if Trump issues an executive order, it will get challenged in court and have an injunction issued.
