Trump Slams NATO, Floats Russia Nuke Deal in European Interview

Donald Trump called NATO obsolete, predicted that other European Union members would follow the U.K. in leaving the bloc, and threatened BMW with import duties over a planned plant in Mexico, according to two European newspapers which conducted a joint interview with the president-elect.

Trump, in an hourlong discussion with Germany’s Bild and the Times of London published on Sunday, signaled a major shift in trans-Atlantic relations, including an interest in lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia as part of a nuclear weapons reduction deal.

He's right. The EU is a crumbling mess, from the Euro to the migrant crisis. Le Pen should win France in May, iirc, and that should be the end of it. NATO has big problems too. Too many members not paying and expect the US to protect them when the time comes.

FYI folks.... instability usually leads to higher commodity prices.... Russia and the Trump administration don't have interests in those things....

    People are talking....

You can protect nations of interest without being part of a defense pact, you know. The US should not be dragged into wars because the EU provoked somebody.

NATO was founded on the threat of the Soviets. That threat collapsed and the West pretty much had its way. I would say that Europe's interests diverged from the US with the rising of the EU, striving to get as many members in including former Soviet countries. NATO was never founded for that cause.

If a Dem president called NATO obsolete, said Putin was a "smart man" and wanted to "make goods deals with Russia", Republicans and so-called conservatives would scream "traitor".

    Somewhere in Texas?

Actually the Russians destroyed more of Syria with their indiscriminate bombing and Assad had no problem butchering his own people. Libya has been labeled a state sponsor of terrorism for awhile. Both countries underwent civil wars in order to overthrow their respective dictators.

The Middle East was destabilized as soon as we invaded Iraq sweet heart.

    Is the EU provoking Russia?

The European Union trying to more European countries to join......? That's crazy.

Russia certainly used the commodity boom to modernize their military and be aggressive in SE Europe. Now... Russia is blowing through its reserve funds and is acting like a country running out of money and running out of young people.

Just saw this, but the margin is tiny and no one's a clear favourite according to the new polls. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I believe you are confusing Obama with Assad. Assad by the way - will be a Trump ally now.

This is obviously what Putin is going for. Oh and look at that! He couldn't have a more favorable president!

    Meanwhile, in Trump's own cabinet...

I wonder if push came to shove would the GOP actually be for weakening or getting rid of NATO.

Just to let everyone here know that NATO nations were gracious enough to follow us into the pointless 2001-2012 'war on terror'. Many NATO service members died for our mistakes.

I'm proud to wear the NATO ISAF medal on my dress blues for those who many jingoist Americans forget died for our country's interest.

This can't be said enough. If Obama had said what Trump is saying, they'd be calling for his impeachment in Congress. That there are raving idiots here who think that somehow Trump babbling his nonsense is a good thing is incredible. Calling them stupid and deluded is simply too kind.

Some might call it a lot of things, but exactly why would anyone call him/her a traitor? Have you forgotten what the definition of a traitor is?

Some president-elect who sells out their country to Putin for personal gain?
