The most disappointing/overhyped Astro players in history...

Nevin was the first overall pick. Talk about disappointing. Of course he became a good player after we traded him. A very late bloomer.

 

Yeah, I really thought he was going to be something.

 

Chris Burke was a good player in the minors, problem was is he fell victim to the old Astros regime and was left in AAA to long. He was past his prime when finally given a chance.

At least the baseball God's gave us Altuve and a World Series championship!!

 

Everyone has their own opinions, but I would genuinely like to know why you included Brandon Puffer. He was a 27th round pick who had already fizzled out of the minor leagues once before we picked him out of the Atlantic League. He didn't make his MLB debut until 27 years-old. What were you expecting?

 

I don't require liking the Williams signing that much, but we gave him a 2 year deal and lost a draft pick over him and he was a flaming disaster. One that should have been seen from a mile away (basically got a contract for having a good ERA the year before and everything else was ignored).

Preston Wilson was only 31, so his falloff was a little surprising, but wasn't God awful (at least at the plate, the field was another matter).

Schafer was a reclamation project when we got him, so I'm surprised people expected much out of him.

Has anyone mentioned Scott Elarton? Mitch Meluskey would be another one.

 

Scott Elarton.

We didn't trade for a prime Roger Clemens because we didn't want to lost Scott Elarton. The 6'7" guy that had no fastball.

 

Elarton & Bell for Clemens... in 1999. Bell would go on to become completely worthless. Clemens was coming off back-to-back sensational FU Boston seasons, but really wasn't great in NY (would have been big improvement for us though, and in the end cost us nothing). Of course we also saw what he did in the National League.

 

We drafted him ahead of Jeter, and the organization promoted him as Caminiti's successor.

Never liked Jeter's defense but imagine an infield of Bagwell, Biggio, Jeter, Caminiti for a generation.

 

First name to come to mind was Eric Anthony. He disappointed the hell out of one young baseball card collector, anyhow.

 

Eric Yelding... seemed like he had the speed to be useful.
Jason Lane... PooPoo's favorite AAAA player.
Kaz Matsui... well hey... he's a Japanese HOFer in the legacy of great 2Bers.
Daryl Ward... he was suppose to have a power swing.
Phil Nevin .... duh.
Greg Swindell... Drayton's first of two big marquee signings that got him scared from chasing any other free agent pitcher.
Carlos Lee... so little effort given...
Decades of failed catchers... Towles (read his Baseball Prospectus on how much they hyped him), Jason Castro, JR Towles, and Eddie Taubensee

For some of the others mentioned --
Can't hate Burke for the 18 inning game.
Elarton survived the inaugural year of Enron Field... when no one else could.
EVERYONE could see Kazmir wearing down in the stretch run.
Jason Jennings was hyped by one person...
JD Martinez... was never really overhyped... and loved how he played.
2004 and 2005 don't happen without Morgan Ensberg...

 

Jordan Lyles was Jason Hirsh v.2

I really thought he would figure things out since he had the velocity uptick. His changeup was nasty, but for some reason the Astros kept making him throw his below average curveball.

 

What's amazing about Jordan Lyles is that he's an 8 year veteran already, and only 27. He could in theory still figure it out... but he's managed to never even be a league average pitcher (based on ERA+).

To add a name... Orlando Miller. He hit 2 HR in his debut. I thought he was going to be the answer to our lengthy SS drought.
