Different situations IMO. The Seahawks have somewhat of a luxury in that they can let Clowney truly test the market and see if they want to match whatever offers he gets. The Texans on the other hand really had no choice with the tag but with the non-exclusive tag, it wasn't really a true test of since no one was going to make an offer with risk of forking over 2 first rounders if the Texans matched.
Literally could have Clowney on the team, instead of having to pay half his salary to play somewhere else last season. That's one of the stupidest trade i have seen made by a GM, the other being this Hopkins trade.
Is anybody actually "winning" this battle after all said/done? Texans didn't get that much in a trade, neither in return or salary relief. Clowney didn't really propel the Seahawks much further. Clowney isn't getting a long-term mega-rich free agent deal... pretty much a referendum on how in-demand he is (trade or otherwise). Seems like just one big waste of time... which is sorta the slogan of the entire JD Clowney career dating back from college.
Do they? I'm not sure Clowney gets "better" with financial security. And after all this time in the league, teams are still trying to figure out his optimal position where he makes the biggest impact. He's closer to being just-a-guy vs being an all-pro. Would be best served on a team with everything already in place, and he's the one to push them over the top.
get mad all you want, but looks like O'Brien may have maximized his return on the Clowney trade. It is doubtful that Seattle will get any compensation when losing Clowney, so that pocket third people expected will never transpire.
Asinine to think the Texans couldn’t have squeezed a first or second rd pick out of Seattle. not sure how you think a “GM” who has a history of getting fleeced in trades somehow “maximized his return.” This implies that he understands value or is a capable enough negotiator - neither have ever been close to proven.
He wont sign with the Texans period. He's not the kind of guy that would gel with O'Brien. Especially after how the trade went down. Quit trying to make fetch happen. (This quarantine is killing me)

What the Texans did with Hopkins, they should have done with Clowney. Hopkins is a true impact player, and they should have held firm for a better deal or kept him. Clowney was replaceable and they held on to him too long and got nothing when they could have moved him earlier and actually gotten something in return. We couldn't get value for Hopkins due to his contract, and we gave up a ton for Tunsil who is in the same situation. Literally every f**king move this chump makes he handles it poorly. I'm waiting for us to trade another haul of picks to address our new WR issue.
