If Clowney leaving has had a direct effect on Whitney Mercilus getting to play his natural position... and wreaking havoc in a more consistent/destructive way than Clowney ever did... that is the exact definition of addition by subtraction. Certainly, they could have handled things better... possibly gotten more in a trade... and Clowney is still a better run-stopper, but Whitney has been playing his ass of thus far this year after being largely invisible last year.
No doubt about it. And honestly I chalk that up on Romeo and the coaching staff never finding a way to fully utilize all 3 guys. But as far as upcoming cap space, the decision on Clowney for this season really had no bearing on it.
I think they tried. Watt moved all over the line. Mercilus moved all over the line. At first, Clowney wanted to plant his hand/rush. Then he was favoring standing up and roaming. Clowney is a very unique talent... but I don't think even he knows which type of defense, or which position, would suit him the best. That's fine if you're a rookie coming into the league with your whole career ahead of you... not fine if you're looking to get paid as one of the best defenders in the NFL, and you really haven't shown that sort of consistent disruptiveness/explosiveness to warrant it.
The return we got for Clowney v. trading Clowney to make room for Mercilus to return to his more natural position is a disingenuous argument. One has nothing to do with the other. You could have traded Clowney, made Mercilus more productive as a result, AND gotten a good return.
Saying that, you’d still like to have gotten someone in return. I mean the guys a freak of nature when it comes to talent.
I agree but think that went out the window when Clowney learned about being traded and let it be known he was prepared to miss games if he didn't go somewhere he wanted. Killing the Clowney - Tunsil trade and his value.
He signed just prior to the Seahawks trade in order to finalize it. He wasn't going to sign unless he was going where he wanted to go. https://lastwordonprofootball.com/2...n-franchise-tag-tender-join-seattle-seahawks/ https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/08/31/texans-jadeveon-clowney-seahawks
1) Yes he did, just prior to the trade (but your point is that he wouldn't have) and 2) Yes, he would have signed if we agreed not to trade him. The only reason he refused to sign is because he knew he was going to be traded.
I doubt that....he would of signed tender from the very beginning even before all the trade rumors then.
Then he’s on the hook for mandatory mini and training camp. Reports were that Clowney was gonna show up after the Cowboys game but got spooked from the trade rumors that popped up right before.
No. He was going to sign the tender until the Texans tried to trade him again. So he didn’t sign the tender so he wouldn’t end up somewhere he didn’t want to go. So we ended up paying Clowney 8.5 million to not play for us so we could get a third rounder.
What's so hard to understand about this? The Texans messed up the bolded part. Conversely with the Miami trade, glad to gets those players but that was a huge overpay. Buy low and sell high vs buy high and sell low....
Also I keep hearing how BOB knew Mercilus would have a big year. If that were the case, the Texans would have made a strong push to wrap him up before the Clowney trade. Instead he will be a free agent after this season, with the Texans in a position where they have to pay a premium again (see a theme?) if they want to keep him.
