Now that is pretty interesting, perhaps they do plan on rolling out with Watson after all. That's the only reason I can think of to "simplify" and it would certainly add a lot more speed to the QB position. There's really no need to simplify things for Savage given that he's been in the system for years and should know it well by now.

Doesn't necessarily pertain to the QB position. Maybe our WRs, TEs and OL just couldn't keep up with what was asked of them last year.

That's possibly true, but the WR group is all returning so we'd hope they were up to speed by now along with the TE group that has also been here for a while. With the O line I think that's the same situation. Why would you need to simplify things for players that have been around at least a year already?

Vandameer said on Texans all access yesterday he thinks Wendell Williams is a lock to make the team. Said he’s looked very smooth and has made quite a jump from last year.

Said he caught a slant and was gone in an instance.

There's been a few times where a WR gets all sorts of glowing reviews in OTAs and camp, just for them to never show up when the lights are on.

Jaiquawn Jarrett is taking part in the mini-camp as a tryout, and he has been helping the safety group. Entering his 5th season out of Temple, Jarrett has played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets. The Texans are on the lookout for another veteran safety to help out their group and they recently had Aaron Williams in for a visit. Word is that the Texans were extending out Williams' visit to continue talks with the former Buffalo Bills safety.

Duane Brown was a no-show at camp today, meaning the start of fines to come his way, which the team is allowed to do under the league's collective bargaining agreement. The players know the situation and want what is best for Brown but understand the business side of things. Johnathan Joseph weighed in on the situation from a veterans’ perspective.

Jadeveon Clowney called D.J. Reader the “secret weapon” of the defense, talking about the nose tackle and how he dominates the game. Clowney was all smiles when talking about Reader, evidence of the impact Reader has made only going into his second seaaon. The defense knows that Reader is a vital part on the interior and he is establishing himself as an important player for the coming future.

We have been on record to say that it will be the Tom Savage show until further notice but do expect the Texans to push Deshaun Watson to see how much he can handle. Bill O’Brien is pressing Watson at all costs to see how he handles coverage against some of the top end defenders on the team, while letting him work with DeAndre Hopkins, Braxton Miller, Will Fuller, and Jaelen Strong. The team wants to ensure he is getting players around him who can help Watson gain confidence. Credit the Texans for pushing Watson to the limit in the offense and putting pressure on Tom Savage to continue performing at a starter level.

Speaking of Deshaun Watson, he continues to impress and throws the football with a purpose. If anything, he continues to refine his mechanics as a quarterback, which is allowing him to drive the football even better. It has been a solid spring for Watson, his best throw came on a pass to Jaelen Strong over the middle after Strong beat his man and Watson’s pass hit him in stride. It would have been a big gain if this was live football; it occurred so quickly, the defenders had no time to react.

Joel Heath is part of a young core on the defensive line that many had questioned going into last season. This season, those insecurities are put to rest. Heath continues to solidify himself as a key player in the rotation of the defensive line and has worked hard to improve his pass rush abilities for 2017. Today, he showed that work by beating his man unabated to the quarterback for what would have been a sack in real time. Heath is trying to show that he is more than a two-down player for the defense and with a season under his belt, he will have a chance to show it.

The Texans are easing Breno Giacomini on the field and letting him take part in individual work and walkthroughs. It is the first time he has been on the field since his signing as a free agent. Still working his way back from back surgery, the Texans are trying to get him healthy for training camp, which is the team’s biggest priority with him and any other player coming off surgery. Where Giacomini fits is yet to be seen but seeing him on the field is a step in the right direction.

Avery Williams was able to show part of his game that he had not been able to do this point - working in coverage. He showed he can run stride for stride with tight ends and broke up a pass, but the referees threw a pass interference flag. In reality, the call could have gone either way. The important part is the realization that Williams has the athletic ability to cover and now he needs to fine tune his game.

Dres Anderson is progressing since his arrival and he made some tough catches at practice today, in particular, a ball thrown with pressure that was behind him. Anderson slid and made the catch away from him, in front of a defender. The key for Anderson is that he looks like he is picking up the offense and more importantly, making plays when the ball is being thrown to him. Meanwhile, Wendall Williams has come a long way as a receiver and made a leaping catch in the end zone off the arm of Brandon Weeden. Williams looks much more competent this season as a wide receiver compared to last and has been consistent with his work all spring.

Another late addition, Sio Moore, was active in coverage and had a near interception. Moore is not assured of anything at the moment but he is getting some much-needed work with the Texans taking it easy on Brian Cushing. Moore is getting his feet wet with the defense and that he is making plays entering his second week is an added plus.

Julién Davenport is doing what he can to get acclimated to the NFL life and he is still working on mastering the pass protection scheme the Texans employ. Davenport has the right frame but is still learning the nuances of the game and how defenses are able to confuse lineman. Davenport is a work in progress and is clearly behind both Chris Clark, Kendall Lamm, and Duane Brown, when Brown returns.

Stephen Anderson put on a show and made two top end receptions. One, off the arm of Tom Savage that was a fingertip catch which he caught in stride and another that he caught in traffic between a linebacker and safety. Anderson is much better in space and has a feel for receiving with his wide receiver background. Today was one of Anderson’s better days this spring.

Both Tyler Ervin and Akeem Hunt look like they belong on this team, in one way or another. Hunt is entering year three in this offense and catches the ball well, working in sync with Weeden. Today, Weeden hit Hunt out of the backfield after a linebacker pressured him but the good read by Weeden led to a pass which hit Hunt in stride for a nice gain in the middle of the field. The trick is for the Texans to find ways to utilize Hunt on offense and get him in space because he lacks some strength to break tackles when defenders get a hold of him. As for Ervin, he has been one of the more intriguing offensive players this spring and it all starts with his confidence. Ervin is quick to his spots and showing he is a plus route runner, catching the ball with ease. He is much more decisive with the ball in his hands and is eating up yardage in a hurry. Some will point out that the team is not in full pads, which is correct, but the moves Ervin has put on defenders, wearing full pads would not have helped to slow him.

One thing we failed to mention in our quick hitters from the quarterback group as a whole is how much their accuracy has improved from last year. Even minus Brock Osweiler, there were still struggles to complete the ball with ease. These are passing camps so the circumstances favor quarterbacks hitting their targets. This spring, it shows with Tom Savage, Brandon Weeden and Deshaun Watson showing how accurately they can be throwing the ball. The group's mechanics really stand out. Everything the quarterbacks are doing with their throwing motion is short and compact with the ball coming out of the right arm slots with quarterbacks driving through the football. There is still a long way to go but this is one early aspect that can not be overlooked.

In this context, likely tight and accurate.

DeAndre Hopkins: Tom Savage has “earned” starting quarterback job
It’s one thing for the coaches to praise quarterback Tom Savage. The players have to believe it, too. In Houston, they apparently do.

“I like his leadership,” receiver DeAndre Hopkins told reporters on Wednesday. “From last year when he wasn’t playing on the field he was still showing the guys, telling us what we should do, helping us out like he was the starting quarterback. Now that he’s in that role it’s not surprise to anybody on this field that he deserves that role.

“He has earned it, not just from playing but from the chemistry he has built in the locker room with everybody.”

That’s an important endorsement, if the Texans truly intend to resist throwing rookie Deshaun Watson into the fray. Of course, that doesn’t mean Watson won’t be thrown into fray.

“He’s a rookie,” Hopkins said of Watson. “He hasn’t put on any pads yet. How I define a quarterback isn’t necessarily what you guys would. What you go out there and do on that field, you got to prove it to me.”

Watson has been proving that he’s not a rookie away from the field.

“He’s far from where I was as a rookie, mentally-wise,” Hopkins said. “At the quarterback position – that’s probably the hardest position to learn on the football team. He has picked it up well. He’s been doing a lot of things, not just on the field but off the field as well. You’ll see him in there in his notebook. As soon as he gets in there he’s on his iPad looking at plays, trying to get better, trying to make his mistakes right. You can’t do that on the football field. You have to do that by off the field.

“Mentally, he has it. . . . It means a lot. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Everybody sees it. Everybody sees what he’s doing outside of the football field, putting in his own time to make himself better and this team.”

So, to summarize, Savage has earned the starting job, but Watson is making a very good impression on one of the most important teammates he can. Maybe the Texans, who have a championship-caliber defense, will win either way.

Then there’s Brandon Weeden, who I feel compelled to mention since he’s in the photo between Savage and Watson. If he’s ever playing for the Texans this year, it will likely mean something has gone horribly wrong.
