That's because George is not Kawhi. Let any top 5 player hit the trade block and you will have multiple bidders with real offers, even if he is a pending free agent. We don't have to look any further than our own GM to find an example of one willing to take that risk to convince franchise changing talent to take more $$ from you than he can get elsewhere in a year.

 

No, that's because you cannot play the gm like in a videogame, you have to make reasonable moves to protect your team. That's why Ainge didn't trade Brown, Tatum etc for George, who might not be Kawhi, but he's still a top 5 SF in the league and these kind of player rarely hit the market, if that's not a good scenario to use as an example here i'm not sure there is one.

 

I bolded the important part. He didn't go all in because George is not a top 5 player. Is he even top 15? If a top 5 player hits the market there will be plenty of bidders. It's not that rare for players of George's caliber to get traded. Cousins was traded last year. Howard was traded this year and a few years ago to LA. Butler and Blake were traded this year. Etc.

Yeah, i'm not arguing Kawhi is better than George, i think George is absolutely top 15 player in this league, top 5 in his spot...the examples of big players you made are not exactly relevant outside of Butler imo, Cousins has a ton of talent but teams were scared to trade for him for various reasons, Blake wasn't even considered a top player after he signed that contract and played the way he did early this season, Dwight -> lol, they traded picks to get rid of him...Butler is a good example, but he wasn't expiring and didn't ask to be traded to a specific team which is what can happen with Kawhi and what happened with George (apparently). That's all i'm saying, if he wants to be in L.A., he's going to be in L.A.sooner or later, and if that's the case the Spurs won't get much for him for other teams, at least not as much as they would get if he's ok in being traded to multiple teams.

First and foremost the Spurs have to help themselves. IF they can not help another Western conference team then that is a bonus. Lakers have some nice assets, but really Boston has the best assets. A Tatum or Brown + Picks + Rozier type of deal would be hard to beat IMO.
