Real Billionaires don't have to threaten the city to get an arena, real billionaires buy arenas cause they got change in their pockets

Clippers owner Steve Ballmer in advanced negotiations to buy The Forum from MSG, sources say

LOS ANGELES -- LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is in advanced negotiations to purchase The Forum in Inglewood, California, from the Madison Square Garden Company, an acquisition that would clear a major hurdle in the Clippers' efforts to construct a new home arena in the vicinity, according to league sources.

The Clippers would neither confirm nor deny the report but issued the following statement to ESPN: "The Clippers continue to pursue plans to build a state-of-the-art, 18,000-seat basketball arena and entertainment complex in Inglewood and are currently working with the city to successfully complete the comprehensive Environmental Impact Report.

I always liked the Forum, it's a beatiful building. I hope he keeps the facade and just does a interior renovation. Would be a massive FU to the Lakers to keep the look and the name but turn the inside in to Clipper Nation.

Must be nice to not only own an NBA team, but to also own an entire stadium.

I don’t get why Balmer doesn’t move the team to Seattle? LA has the Lakers, an ultra historic and glamorous sports franchise... they really don’t need the Clippers...

Money. It doesn’t matter if the Clippers are second-fiddle in Los Angeles; their television deal will always be worth more than what they could get in Seattle. National media pays more attention to them even though they’re LA’s second team. Hell, they even attract free agents by virtue of location. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George would not have orchestrated their arrival if the team was in Seattle.

While I agree that the NBA is incredibly in short-sighted by not returning a team to Seattle, moving a franchise from the second-largest media market isn’t a likely option for them to right the wrong they created in the northwest.

Cuz a team in LA is worth more than one in Seattle.

In what way is a Seattle-based team more valuable than a Los Angeles team?

Market share.... everyone in Seattle will be a Seattle bball team fan.
The Lakers are LA.. and as long as they are there Clippers will always be second fiddle...

Besides...while Seattle may not be LA, it's no slouch..Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, most educated city per capita, ...there's a lot of tech money there and it's growing.

That said, as someone else pointed out...Kawhi would never have signed with the Clips if they were in Seattle and PG wouldn't want to go be there either... so in terms of free agency, it definitely has its perks..

Still LA doesn't need two teams...

These are very good points... but Seattle is no slouch. It's a pretty big market that's growing...lots of big companies, lots of money, lots of well paid educated youngsters with money to burn...

Ballmer ain't doing this to make money. This is his retirement hobby like gardening or golf.

I don't disagree with you at all. Not having a team in Seattle while maintaining there franchises in New Orleans, Memphis and Oklahoma City is an awful business decision by the NBA. It was an awful decision to rob the city of Seattle of 40 years of NBA history.

However, there are only 18-20,000 seats in an arena. Even if every one of those seats were sold to corporate ticket holders it wouldn't take away from the relatively smaller size of the Seattle media market compared to Los Angeles. Broadcast revenue is where the league makes its money and there is a lot of speculation that the next tv deal will be smaller than the one in 2015 that allowed the Warriors to sign Kevin Durant. That's why there is so much consternation about lower ratings this season.

On an emotional level, the Clippers would fit a lot better in Seattle. But I don't see any way the league forfeits the Los Angeles media market for Seattle.
