Hey guys, I've watched a little football over the past few years but haven't really had a team to back (partly due to the only guys from my country that play are punters, awesome fun rooting for them..) Anyway i'm thinking of jumping onto the Texans as i already follow the rockets religiously and i feel there is room for another sporting team and why not the Texans. Can anyone give me a run down on the key players/ moments in history/ vilified players/ rivalries etc.? Looking forward to getting behind a new team!
Great choice. What country are you from? Top plays in Texan's History: Link Top plays of 2011 season: Link Key players Offense: Arian Foster, best all around running back in NFL. Andre Johnson, best player in Texan's history. One of the top wide receivers. Matt Schaub, a quarterback that puts up great numbers but isn't considered elite, yet. This could be his year. Owen Daniels, a pro bowl tight end. Usually the second option in the passing game. Duane Brown, best Left tackle in the league. Defense: Jonathan Joseph, one of the top corners in the league. Brian Cushing, one the best inside linebackers in the league. The spark plug of the defense. JJ Watt, a dominant defensive end. He should have an outstanding year. Daniel Manning, one of the best tackling safeties in the league. Vilified players: No bad apples here. Rivalries: Houston's old team, the Tennessee Titans. We have been miserable against the Colts. We have never lost to the Dolphins. We have never beaten the Raven's.

Good summary. I'd add that the defense was historically terrible in 2010 and rebounded to be a top three defence in 2011. Thanks to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Oh, and Duane Brown isn't the best LT in the league. Probably not even top five. He is damn good though.
Key players -offense- QB - Matt Schaub RB - Arian Foster WR - Andre Johnson Some great OL as well but for a fan just getting into it the above ones are what you will most likely care about -defense- DE - JJ Watt, Antonio Smith LB - Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, Brooks Reed CB - Jonathan Joseph S - Daniel Manning Key moment in history is last year making the playoff for the first time. The defining moment of the season would be JJ Watt interception returned for a touchdown in the first playoff game in Reliant against the Bengals. No villified players so to say, but public enemy #1 is, and I can NOT stress this enough, Bud Adams. The Owner of the Titans. He is hated here because he moved the Oilers out of Houston and took pro football away from the largest city in the state of Texas. Rivalries are the divison opponents. Titans, Colts, and Jaguars.
Yea it's all from a few games last season. Texans D was definitely one of the more exciting defenses to watch last season.
I'm not a hater in the least. Especially when it comes to the Texans. Brown is a damn good LT, and provides exactly what the Texans need at that position. He just isn't the best in the league. No biggie. But weren't you piling it on KJ yesterday? I believe you described him as: "pretty damn bad." Right?
If you're able to be a Rockets fan, you will find being a Texans fan to be much easier. Arguably the best running back (Arian Foster) and wide receiver (Andre Johnson) in the league. A good, underappreciated quarterback in Matt Schaub. A good mix of coaches: Gary Kubiak, the head coach who specializes in offense/QBs, and the defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who (based off last season) is arguably the best at what he does in the NFL. On defense, there are a lot of exciting players to watch on any snap: Connor Barwin, Brian Cushing, Jonathan Joseph, Danieal Manning, Brooks Reed, Antonio Smith, and JJ Watt. Rookies to watch: Whitney Mercilous (OLB) and DeVier Posey (WR)
I sure was, so you're saying Kareem isn't pretty damn bad? For you to say Brown isn't top 5 is pretty harsh though. I admit he's not as recognized as most LTs in the league but I'd have him at least top 5. 1. Joe Thomas 2. Jake Long 3. Ryan Clady 4. Jordan Gross 5. Duane Brown
No, i don't think that Kareem is pretty damn bad. You do have a legitimate argument for Duane Brown being top five. But that's putting him ahead of the Packer's Chad Clifton, Patriot's Matt Light, and Jason Peters from the Eagles. It's not totally ridiculous, but it isn't a sure thing either. But again, Duane Brown is exactly what the Texans need at LT. He's mobile, and I think I read that he didn't give up a single sack last season. TJ Yates would've been slaughtered without him. He should be in for a nice payday after this season.
Donny's guide to being a Houston Texan fan: 1) Matt Schaub is the cause of, and solution to, all the Texans' problems. 2) Kevin Walter makes $999 million dollars a year. 3) Vince Young is always an option. Al-ways. 4) The defense or special teams has never lost us a game, ever. 5) When in doubt, tight end. 6) Bob McNair won't sign you if you got a parking ticket. 7) Rick Smith cuts people based on whether or not they let him win at Call of Duty. 8) Our cheerleaders dress like nuns. 9) Dallas Cowboys fans are the reason we have to pay $10 to stand around in a publicly financed parking lot. 10) Battlefight.
any list of rivalries that does not include Dallas is incomplete. They may not be in the same conference, but you ask any long-time Houston football fan and I guarantee a majority say that the Cowgirls are number uno on their list
Making an argument for brown being the best LT in the league is not a bad one at all (he's a monster run blocker and a great pass blocker, e.g he didn't give up a sack all year). At the very worst, he is top 3...he didn't give up a sack all year Matt Light...he retired and just isn't as good as Brown. He's a better run blocker than Clifton (and pass blocker in my opinion) Jason Peters has a ruptured Achilles.
