Verlander becomes 5th pitcher in history with 4 HRs and 12 Ks same game. Colby Lewis '12 -- 5 HRs 12 K Curt Shilling '97 -- 4 HRs 12 K Art Mahaffey '62 -- only pitcher who won, hit a GS same game Bill Werle '50 -- 12 IP 13 Ks
The team needs another bat. Altuve, Bregman, and Gurriel are the only day to day consistent hitters on this team. Everyone else is up and down, streaky, etc. Kemp is a good hitter but he's not in the lineup everyday.
They still need another bat imo. Correa will help but when healthy he falls under the category of up and down as well. Several players played above their heads last year offensively. Wouldn't hurt to shore up the offense at the trade deadline to take them over the top like Verlander took the pitching over the top last year.
You think Tucker will be going back down to the Minors or do you think they will give him more "burn?" I think they have seen enough.
The assumption would be for JD Davis...but I wonder what else they might have in mind. Correa likely won't be ready to go right away. You think 1 week qualifies as having "seen enough"? Good thing you weren't the gm when Bregman opened 0-32.
Maybe last they would make a 4 run comeback but honestly this year they’re not the same team offensively. If we’re down more than 4 runs I know a comeback isn’t happening
Got to love this guy's professionalism and demeanor. He's ready to get right back out there and won't let a few bad starts rattle him. An amazing athlete...
Agree with your sentiment but it's starting to look silly to not have Kemp in the lineup everyday. Tucker hopefully will be great someday, but right now Kemp is a much bigger contributor. It's not an unreasonable scenario that Tucker winds up being a star but just isn't a contributor in 2018. He's only 21 and this is his first exposure to the Big Leagues. Kemp's OPS is .811. That is higher than the OPS of Yuli, Springer, Gattis, Reddick and ranks him behind only Bregman, Altuve and Correa. The sample size for Kemp isn't that small anymore at 115. Based on OPS alone, he's the fourth most efficent hitting Astro. Yes he's not a great fielder but all things considered, it's looking like the wise decision is to bump him from a platoon guy to an every day guy. That should help the offensive struggles. I do think the team needs another bat and hope they trade for one. I don't think they need a top of the line bat, but a quality one mid priced bat would fill a need.
As another guy said to another guy Glad you weren’t the GM when Bregman started 0-32 Tucker is here to stay unless he has a really extended bad streak. The people making baseball decisions for us understand how little a week is White probably went down so he could get at bats while we are at the break, his time is limited either way with Correa back relatively soon
This roster is a lot more loaded now than when Bregman started 0-32 so the decisions are much tougher. I also don't believe Bregman's 0-32 occurred in the middle of a Division Title run as we are currently in. The Mariners and Athletics are making this division race pretty tight and down the stretch run it will get harder to keep a really young guy in the lineup if production doesn't improve quite a bit, particularly given the spark and consistency we've seen from Tony Kemp. Bregman was also a sensational defensive player whereas Tucker is not. Tucker is purely there for his bat. Could be a situation where Kemp takes more of Marwin's time and Tucker plays, but not every day. If Tucker busts out over the next 3-4 weeks, we are likely to see Kemp in the platoon role. I think that's about the time frame you give Tucker to either improve or see a lesser role for this season. That's around how long the team gave Fisher last year before deciding he needed more time and was relegated to a pinch running/backup OF role. This isn't an indictment on Tucker as opposed to a holistic view of what is best for the team.
They've given up 4+ runs only 36 times (4 runs 10 times) in 99 games (12-24 W-L), out of those 26 they've trailed by 4+ runs in only 13 games: 8-1 to MIN, lost 9-8 6-1 to BOS, lost 9-3, pen gave up 3 runs in 8-9th 6-1 to OAK, lost 8-1 7-2 to CLE, lost 8-6 8-3 to OAK, lost 8-3, 5th run lead gained in the 9th 6-1 to SEA, lost 7-1 5- to TOR, won 7-6, TOR scored 5 in top of 1st 5-0 to CLE, lost 5-4 5-0 to TAM, lost 5-2 4-0 to TAM, won 5-4 4-0 to NYY, lost 4-0 4-0 to NYY, lost 4-0, NYY scored 4 in top of 9th 6-2 to DET, lost 6-3 I would consider those 5 games to be good comebacks, even if they lost. Out of 13 opportunities, I don't think that's too shabby. Thought that might be of interest.
