That rumor never made sense to me. Cubans are a bit of their own beast in the international world though, so I'm not sure counting Yordan puts my concerns to rest. I do recognize that was a joke and I'm taking it too literally.
Whether it was a wink wink or just a trade, for all intents and purposes, Alvarez counts as a win for the international scouting department, IMHO. A big win. If Alvarez plays half as well as he did last year for the next 6 years, Astros international scouting department has done a great job since Luhnow has been here.
Rumor is Dodgers signed Alvarez solely to trade him to Astros so Astros could skirt international signing rules. Dodgers got Fields out of it. I doubt it is true and the wink part was a joke. That said, Alvarez is a win for international scouting department.
Ughhhh I wish we got Brett Anderson for 5 million plus 2 million in incentives. Good for number 4th or 5th starter.
I guess I wasn't terribly clear. Alvarez is a big win for the Astros, but I don't think he validates the process. The best way to create value on the international market is to identify which 14 and 15 year old kids are most likely to turn into stars and get them to agree to deals. It's great that they were able to identify Alvarez as having potential, but he was a 6'4" 190 lb 18 year old who had held his own in Cuba's top league a year earlier, so it doesn't give me a ton of confidence that they're going to be able to identify those 14 year olds.
I agree with this for the most part. Hopefully a guy like Freudis Nova can help change that narrative. A potential Correa trade and who they potentially replace him with might signify the amount of confidence they have in Nova and if they think he could one day be the SS of the future.
The Astros have been talking to the Diamondbacks about a deal for Archie Bradley..... the Cubs and a couple other teams have as well.
Padres are an interesting team. In a unique position with Hosmer and Machado contracts. I don’t think they would entertain any offers for Francisco Mejia, but I would love to get him in an Astros uniform. This board may explode if Luhnow pulled that off.
