Almost like someone's been reading our posts... https://tv.avclub.com/stranger-things-season-3-ruined-hopper-1836251870/amp
Finished the season and thought it was far better than Season 2. Of course not as good as Season 1 but that's to be expected as it's hard to recapture the magic of seeing this show for the first time. I don't get all the hate towards Hopper's character development this season. Spoiler The guy has been through a ton of **** and him being a 13 throughout the season ended perfectly at the end. His teenage daughter is also some lab experiment that has psychic powers, I'm sure its already hard enough to handle a normal teenage girl. In the end he was still that giant softy that everyone loved in Season 1 but he had just gone through so much crap, it didn't show in the obvious ways that Season 1 portrayed. He knew he had to die and accepted it thus nodded to Joyce to turn the keys. How they did the letter at the end was perfect to cap off his character development. He was the guy that had to go through all the **** for other people to be okay.
I wouldn't say that, so far it's really just me that I've seen, & the author of that article (DreamShook actually said he liked Hopper at 13), so seems I'm on an island. I'll put aside whether we think that's a reasonable change consistent with the character they'd already established (although I don't), because integrity is not really my problem here. Mostly it's that Hopper 2.0 was just unwatchable, for me, he the biggest burn of s3. They similarly, inconsistently, rebuilt Joyce's character, but I have no problem with that about face, because she has become so much more watchable.
I had to go back and re-watch when they sang that silly song a few times. That was pretty funny. Unfortunately, it may have cost a certain someone his life due to the delay. I don't possibly see how he could have survived. But, stranger things have happened.
Basically his volume level. He had more range in the previous seasons from being calm and cool to action hero. This season, he's just angry and loud the whole time. I understand the criticism, but it worked within the story and I didn't mind as much.
Great season! One thing I've appreciated since the beginning has been the acting. Spoiler That "American" at the end has gotta be Hop or Brenner or El's dad!
I thought the season was awesome overall, but would agree with anyone that thought russian terminator was dumb and didn't really work. But on the whole, FANTASTIC TELEVISION!!
Surprised so many of you younguns know about "The Neverending Story." I figured it came and went with our generation.
Awesome amazing season. They do such a good job mixing the lol humor even in tense situations as well as the heart to heart stuff. So well done can’t wait till season 4.
Great season. I liked how they didn't make it a 13 episode filler fest and cut enough to smooth out the rough edges. S2 was so bad, I had to watch the recap and reminded myself why I hated Nancy (who became alot more sympathetic this season) I thought Mad Hopper was perfect in the sense that he became a hopeless one parent dad trapped with expectations from the 80s. It's Homer Simpson (another 80s dad parody) w/ a gun.
Guy who sings it looks like a David Spade character My buddy in Jr High used to sing the chorus to this 'This is getting borrrring, (yawn noise)'
