I’ve probably watched a dozen or so new Netflix shows. Every single one of them has a central plot line about a character coming out. I don’t have a problem with the nature of it, but rather how* they go about constructing these plot lines. I actually think that it undermines causes with the fake sense of sincerity, turning it into a novelty by being like “We checked the box”. And just to re-iterate, I am pro gay marriage, people should be allowed to be with whoever makes them happy. It’s a disservice to the struggles people actually go through with regards to the identity crisis and being who they really are. Kind of like being subjected to being a “token” character that people sweep under the rug to be like “OK, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way.” I don’t think this is all shows, some actually do a really good job in their portrayal. Elite is a good example as it goes contrasts two characters from different backgrounds and their struggles with their identity.
Ehh a long time ago it was poor young man makes a fortune through hard work and perseverance. Then it was pretty poor girl marries rich guy. Then it was sassy black woman becomes friend and confidant of successful white woman. Now it is character X secretly is a gay. Next it will be disabled people having strong sex lives portrayed in graphic carnal detail. Whatever... just be glad we don’t have to rely on VHS.
I have a problem with it. They've been shoving it down our throats for the past 50 years. Judging by Hollywood, at least 25% of people are gay. It is so predictable now that it's a genuine "roll eyes" moment when it inevitably happens. Figure out more original storylines.
Just checked Wikipedia. Comedies with a gay character: 70's - 13 80's - 13 90's - 33 00's - 72 10's - 154 Dramas with a gay character: 70's - 0 80's - 15 90's - 66 00's - 246 No info on the 10's Anyway, you can see where this has been going. It's a stale, lazy storyline.
Hollywood averages 700 films per year, so 318 out of 7000 in the 2000's. My god. 4.5% of the films had a gay character. What will we do. What. Will. We. Do? They are approaching the rate at which black characters appeared in films in the 1960. The horror. I'm going to guess the number of films with a heterosexual character was about 100%? Correct me if I'm wrong there. Not every movie is made for you, nor should it be.
those aren’t percentages. there are way more shows being made today than ever before so of course numbers would be higher.

They are just people trying to make a living, Fatty. If it bugs you, change the channel. I seriously doubt that they will miss you when you’re not watching them. And if that doesn’t help, you might want to consider therapy, or doing more food reviews!
